Early speech intervention helps develop children’s speech and language skills and helps them to become more effective communicators.

Here are some things to look out for to help you understand if your child has a speech and language delay or not:

1. by 12 months: is not using gestures, such as pointing or waving bye-bye.
2. by 18 months: prefers using gestures over vocalizations to communicate and has trouble imitating sounds, has trouble understanding simple verbal requests.
3. by 2 years: can only imitate speech or actions and doesn't produce words or phrases spontaneously, says only some sounds or words repeatedly
4. 2 years: can't follow simple directions or instructions
