WATCH | Why so many government patients get cervical cancer. And what to do about it

Thousands of South African women die of cervical cancer, caused by the human papillomavirus, every year. But it needn’t be so: it’s preventable and treatable - if caught early enough. Gynaecologic oncologist Langanani Mbodi explains to Mia Malan what can be done to help government patients.

Beware of Cancer Information on the Internet.

The Internet is an endless source of information and, for many of us, our first go-to for just about everything we want to know. It is also a tempting tool for medical self-diagnosis, but one you should be careful of.

People facing cancer often use this information to make decisions about their illness and treatment. Some of this information is more reliable than the rest, but it can be hard to tell at first glance.

Cancer information on the Internet comes from many different sources – expert health organisations, government agencies, universities, merchants, interest groups, the general public, and scam artists. Anyone can post any kind of information online and some people may be passing along information that’s limited, inaccurate, or just plain wrong. Some even try to deceive you.

We suggest that if you feel you have Cervical Cancer to please have a test, either through your gynae or our online Pap Smear tests. This way you can be 100% sure and can start with the correct treatment.

Cancer doesn’t have to define you, and this is evident in the incredible story of 6-year-old Gus the Goldendoodle.

Gus, a three-legged dog with cancer, jumped into a river to save a baby otter in Minnesota. Although this incredible story is about a pet, it shows exactly how life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it!

Don't become a statistic and NEVER GIVE UP!

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of KwaZulu-Natal, whether directly or indirectly, impacted by this unprecedented state of disaster.

Some of the things we're all witnessing are just too shocking to describe. To those rescue teams, volunteers, clean-up crews, and organisations that have worked diligently to help those in need, you truly are earth's angels and thank you for all you are doing!

Please keep safe as I hear of more rains expected this Friday!

Cervical cancer is a disease of inequity of access, often referred to as the "silent killer" and almost entirely preventable. The new WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) recommendation is concerned about the slow introduction of the HPV vaccine into immunization programs and overall low population coverage, particularly in poorer countries.

SAGE recommends updating dose schedules for HPV as follows:
• one or two-dose schedule for the primary target of girls aged 9-14
• one or two-dose schedule for young women aged 15-20
• Two doses with a 6-month interval for women older than 21.

The problem we have in South Africa is access to the vaccine. I know of 2 parents who have tried to get their 9-year-old daughters the vaccine and all clinics are telling them the same story. That is that there are no vaccines available and try again in 6 months.

If we have a cure for the silent killer, this should be a priority in Africa to have this disease eliminated. But elimination is a technical public health term and does not mean eradication. It simply means getting case numbers down very low and keeping them there.

So please, if you have children please consider taking them for the HPV vaccine. Due to COVID-19, many have forgotten about cervical cancer. Unfortunately, this means that rather than reflecting and celebrating a welcome reduction in cancer, we are finding a backlog of missed early cancers that will need to be addressed as the pandemic wanes.

In developing countries, limited access to effective screening means that the disease is often not identified until it is further advanced and symptoms develop. In addition, prospects for treatment of such late-stage disease may be poor, resulting in a higher rate of death from cervical cancer in th...

As a woman, I understand the fact women miss their regular . You may feel “embarrassed”, maybe you are afraid of being exposed, or be “afraid of the results,” or even the fact that you may dislike the doctor, you may have found the procedure too expensive and let's be fair you’re busy, and it’s far too easy to put off your regular pap smear test.

Ladies, please don’t let unhappiness or uncertainty about your body stop you from a life-saving test. A pap smear test, combined with an HPV test can find cervical cancer cells early. The chance of successful treatment of cervical cancer is very high if the disease is caught early.

So if you feel body-shamed or have any reason for not wanting to go to your gynaecologist, then I have the solution with a home kit that is affordable and simple.

We believe in giving cytology the personal touch.

My laboratory started because of the unfailing belief that my husband has in me. I had reached a stage in my career where I felt like I was going to get nowhere on a measly salary, working hard for very little reward. My husband invested in me and gave the encouragement that I needed to change my life and I have never looked back since. I decided to study Medical Technology and specialize in Cytology when I was still at school. I studied at Technikon OFS. I did my practical training at the medical facility at Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein and completed it at the medical faculty at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. I received the award for the best student in my year during my studies.

Cytology is something that I am passionate about. Many people might be put off sitting behind a microscope and looking at cells all day, but for me, it’s like looking at a new picture every slide and find it incredibly rewarding to be able look at difficult slides and know that my diagnoses assist the doctors in their treatment of their patients. Whenever I screen a slide I always have it in the back of my mind that this could be my smear and how would want it to be treated. I think that is why Cytology is such a passion for me, it’s about a woman helping other women.

The product I provide is called SoloPap™ and is an HPV & PAP smear at-home test kit. Testing for HPV and cervical abnormalities is now available in the comfort of your own home. Solopap™ is effective because not only does it screen for HPV but it also acts as a traditional Pap smear to ensure a total health screening.

SoloPap™ empowers us, as women, to take control of our health, our way, on our own time, with discretion and comfort in the privacy of our own homes. It’s time to take control of our own health, it’s time for SoloPap!
