My name is Jessica Ackermann, 36 years of age, married and a mommy to 3 beautiful little angels and one in heaven. Losing my child and almost my life in 2008 in a vehicle accident has shaken my life. It took me a while to search the meaning and the wonder of what I actually should be doing…after a very long walk.. I have come to realize it is ‘to serve other mothers’. I have an intense yearning to become a part of the world of birthing, caring for mothers and learning more about everything related to natural birth as well as caesareans. Being a mother whom birthed all 3 my pregnancies through caesarean made me realise how wonderful it would have been back then if I had someone with me all the time, to assist me, to guide me in the information I so greatly needed. I had my husband through it all, but it would have changed my emotions having someone nurturing what I felt, just with added comfort. Having gone through the horrid ‘disease’ of Post Natal Depression/Psychosis with my first born in 2006 and then recently with my 3rd born in 2012, being hospitalized because of this disease and working closely with PNDSA, getting support, giving support in the road to recovery has just exploded my passion for birth and support for women during labor as well as caesarians pre and postnatal. I decided to follow my passion and become a Doula. I started off my training through Wombs SA at Wits Faculty of Health Sciences in June 2013 through Barbara Hanrahan. It continues to be an honor to be allowed into the sacred space of each birth to support, encourage and assist each couple in their journey into parenthood. A woman needs acceptance and support during this experience and I am able to remain focused on what is unfolding, and provide emotional and physical support in whichever form is necessary at that moment. I believe that birth is a natural process and that all women have the right to birth their own way be it natural or caesarean in a safe, loving and non-judgmental environment. I will support you to birth in the way that YOU wish and empower you to make informed decisions.
