For many patients, living with a stoma bag is a life-changing experience, emotionally physically, and socially.

Edenvale Regional Hospital patient Khupe Mthandazi (27) knows this journey all too well.

Khupe underwent stoma surgery in 2023 and has recently had successful stoma reversal as part of the Mandela Day Surgical Marathon.

As a young and active man, he had to give up his greatest passion, soccer. "I felt uncomfortable, like I wasn’t myself anymore," he said. "I stopped playing, stopped hanging out with my friends. I didn’t want anyone to know."

The stoma affected his confidence and left him feeling isolated. Today, thanks to the reversal, he is looking forward to the recovery and getting back on to the field.

"I am excited, I feel like this is a second chance for me to live life to the fullest," he concludes.
