SANCA Wedge Gardens in the community

Treatment is just one part of the solution to the substance use crisis. Outreach is another.

“Wedge Gardens participates in corporate wellness days and community talks whenever we’re invited,” says Adèl Grobbelaar, who heads up the Johannesburg-based treatment centre. “But the stigma still holds people back.”

Employees often avoid speaking up during these events, fearing judgment or job loss.

“We want people to know: You don’t have to suffer in silence. Substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a moral failure.”

This World Drug Day, today June 26), SANCA Wedge Gardens encourages workplaces to invite experts to speak openly about substance use, mental health and support options.

“Talking breaks the silence. And breaking the silence breaks the stigma,” says Grobbelaar.
