From a young age, boys are taught to be strong. But strength isn't silence.

“Boys don’t cry.”
“Man up.”
“Be a man.”

These words might sound small, but they shape big parts of who we become.

When boys are told to hide their feelings, they grow into men who struggle to share their pain. Being stoic isn’t always strength—it can be a shield from connection, healing, and growth.

🧠 True strength is being vulnerable.
💬 True courage is saying, "I'm not okay."
🧍🏽‍♂️True manhood includes feeling—deeply and honestly.

Let’s raise boys who are allowed to feel. Who cry. Who reach out.

Navigating the journey of parenthood is beautiful, but it can also be incredibly challenging. Perinatal mental health – encompassing both pregnancy and the postpartum period – is influenced by a complex interplay of factors. Understanding these can help us better support ourselves and those around us.

Here are some key influences:

✨ Hormonal Shifts: The rapid and significant changes in hormones during pregnancy and after birth can profoundly impact mood and emotional well-being.

🤝 Social Support: A strong network of family, friends, and community provides emotional, practical, and informational support, which is crucial for mental resilience.

🧠 Past Experiences: Previous mental health conditions, trauma, or adverse life events can increase vulnerability during the perinatal period.

🏡 Socioeconomic Factors: Financial stress, housing insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and lack of resources can significantly heighten the risk of perinatal mental health challenges.

😴 Sleep & Nutrition: Adequate sleep and a balanced diet are fundamental to physical and mental health. The disruptions common in the perinatal period can take a toll.

It's Men's Mental Health Monday:
In South Africa, statistics reveal a concerning picture:

1 in 4 men will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime. (Source: SADAG - South African Depression and Anxiety Group)

Su***de rates among men in South Africa are four times higher than among women. (Source: Stats SA)

Only 1 in 10 men experiencing mental health challenges will seek professional help. (Source: SADAG)

These aren't just numbers; they represent fathers, sons, brothers, and friends right here in South Africa. The stigma surrounding men's mental health often prevents them from seeking the support they need.

Social attitudes and behaviours encourage the consumption of alcohol as a recreational activity and the holidays are a time when most of us like to "let go" and have a little more fun than ususal. We get it, we've all worked really hard all year!

It is however also important that we are mindful of decisions that may negatively impact our health our relationships as well as our communities.

The effects of alcohol misuse are far-reaching:

1. Exacerbates gender-based violence and criminality;
2. Breaks down families and the larger society
3. Increases irresponsible driving and the likelyhood of accidents
4. Inhibits our ability to make good decisions
5. Impacts our mood
6. Increases the likelihood of conflict
7. Impacts brain health

THIS LIST IS IN NO WAY EXHAUSTIVE.

The challenging question what do we consider "excessive" alcohol use? According to saps.gov.za, in South Africa, the legal BAC limit in South Africa is 0.05 grams per 100 millilitres of blood, which corresponds to a breathalyser reading of 0.24 milligrams of alcohol per 1000 millilitres of breath. Did you know that being sedentary for long periods of time can impact your mental health?

💚Studies suggest that without physical activity, less serotonin is released, so you may have fewer positive feelings and less motivation.

🤍 Furthermore, high amounts of sedentary time are associated with poor mood, stress, and sleep. Decreased daily sedentary time (in other words more active time), predicted improved mental wellbeing over a year (as recorded in a study by Elllingson et. al, 2018).

💚So get your body moving!!!

Our lifestyles can either promote health and wellbeing or negatively impact our health.

🤍 Studies (like the one conducted by Hecht et. al., (2022)) found that individuals that consume high levels of ultra processed foods have more adverse mental health symptoms. The study found that these individuals were significantly more likely to report at least mild depression.

💚 Many other studies have corroborated these findings. For example a study published in Frontiers in nutrition 9, 1058190, 2022, found that sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and fast-food consumption is significantly associated with adolescents' poor mental health.
