Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age and has severe Quality of Life consequences for women living with this chronic, incurable condition. Medical therapy and surgery - individually or in combination remain the mainstay of treatment. Surgery should be reserved and limited to as few surgical interventions as possible. Surgery should only be undertaken by expert endometriosis surgeons. In South Africa, dienogest (Visanne) remains the only medication registered for the long-term treatment of endometriosis. Other treatments such as GnRh agonists are registered for short term i.e. 6 months, use. Oral contraceptives, LARCs (long-term reversible contraceptives) such as the Mirena or Kyleena are prescribed to help manage symptoms even though they are not registered for endometriosis treatment. Pain killers, such as NSAIDs are often used in conjunction with endometriosis treatment to further help alleviate pain.
Lynne Zurnamer, Co-founder of Endometriosis-SA and Owner of Oz Healthcare, is interviewed by SAFM.

In South Africa we have all of these medications available to us - except Wegovy at this stage. If you buy into the latest scientific data showing that Obesity should be viewed as a chronic disease, and as such managed by a medical professional, watch this informative video setting out the pro-s and con-s on the medications used for the treatment of obesity.

Obesity is a chronic disease that requires medical intervention and medication - just like any other chronic disease. So why are people living with obesity still blamed for their weight, discriminated against - and stigmatised, with common perceptions that weight stigmatization is justifiable?

Watch Carte Blanche this Sunday. Endometriosis is a PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefit) and we often have to fight to get our PMBs approved. This is the real life situation for a patient with a rare disease who needs his medication but, despite this disease being a PMB - the medical aid is not delivering. Neither is the Council for Medical Schemes doing what they should be doing to fight for the rights of this patient. "Our rare conditions have spanned for over a decade. Numerous Council for Medical Schemes rulings later, both on complaints and appeals levels, and we still have to go through the same, tedious, lengthily and often expensive process time and time again, to SAVE LIVES!" Says Kelly du Plessis, CEO for Rare Diseases South Africa".
Why? Because the system allows it, and the medical schemes use the defunct process to their advantage. On average, this process has taken us over 2 years per patient. 2 years without treatment. 2 years of pain and suffering. Only to get to the same result which is that Enzyme Replacement Therapies MUST be covered as a PMB. We have not one ruling to the contrary.
Thank you to for giving us a voice to highlight the difficulty we have, and hoping that the likes of Be healthy with Medihelp Medical Aid relook at their decisions, and authorise Zachs treatment without further delay!
