Watch this tribute to the heroes of our wards.

Nurses are not just staff. They are the backbone of our health system.

Beyond International Nurses Day, which took place on the 12th of May, all year we salute every nurse who has ever stayed late, held a hand, or fought for a patient when no one else was watching.

The theme is clear: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

Tag a nurse who has cared for you or your family.
Let them know: You are seen. You are valued. You are the future.

The "Salt Hidden in Plain Sight"

Most of the salt we eat doesn’t come from the kitchen shaker—it’s hidden in the food we buy every day.

Bread, gravies, and packaged snacks are often packed with more sodium than we realise. This "hidden" salt is a major driver of high blood pressure, the "silent killer" that affects nearly half of all South African adults.

Take control of your health:
• Read the labels: Look for "low sodium" options.
• Choose fresh: Prioritise whole foods over processed ones.
• Get checked: Know your blood pressure numbers!
What’s one low-salt swap you’ve made at home? Share your tips below!

World Salt Awareness Week (12–18 May) and World Hypertension Day (17 May) are not isolated dates on a calendar, they are a wake up call for South Africa. High blood pressure is a silent epidemic, and our national salt glutted diet is one of its main drivers. As medical and dental professionals, we have both the responsibility and the opportunity to shift this trajectory, one patient, one household, and one policy at a time. Hospice Week, which took place from 4–10 May, is a powerful reminder that every South African deserves pain relief and compassionate care, no matter how ill they are. Yet, most people still can’t access palliative services.

Learn why hospice and palliative care matter and what needs to change—read our latest blog on the SAMDP website: https://samdp.co.za/4-10-may-is-hospice-week/
