She sits quietly by the window, memories flickering between clarity and silence. Her story is not unique. It is the story of thousands of older South Africans living with Alzheimer’s, often in silence, stigma, and neglect.

As we marked International Day of Older Persons on 1 Oct, and Mental Health Awareness Month, SAMDP is shining a spotlight on mental illness in older persons, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s and dementia.

• Raising awareness of dementia and ageing with dignity
• Supporting caregivers and families
• Advocating for stronger mental health and geriatric care in South Africa
