🌍World Malaria Day Awareness 🦟

In line with World Malaria Day, we’re raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of malaria. Early recognition can save lives!

⚠️ Common symptoms include:
• Fever (often high and recurring)
• Chills and sweating
• Headaches
• Muscle and joint pain
• Fatigue and weakness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhea

🚨 In severe cases, symptoms may include confusion, difficulty breathing, seizures, or jaundice.

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, especially after being in a malaria-risk area, seek medical attention immediately.

đź’ˇ Prevention is key: use mosquito repellents, sleep under treated nets, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed.

World Autism Acceptance Month is an opportunity to raise awareness, acceptance and create a society where autistic people are supported and understood.

Autism is a complex, lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects individuals' communication, social interaction and behaviour in diverse ways.

People living with autism fall under the Neurodivergent umbrella because their brains develop and process information differently, show a spectrum of symptoms ranging from mild to severe, each with unique characteristics, presentation and potential to function.

Whether at home, school, or work, how you show up when supporting an autistic colleague, classmate, or family member can help create a more inclusive and accepting world.

Doctors - your voice matters

With NHI currently on hold, this is a critical moment to shape the future of healthcare in South Africa.

What are your key concerns or expectations?
Let’s start the conversation.

What’s happening with NHI in South Africa?

The National Health Insurance (NHI) is currently on hold, and here’s what that means:
• No part of the NHI is being implemented yet
• No changes to your current healthcare access or services
• A key Constitutional Court hearing (5–7 May 2026) will determine what happens next

This is an important moment for South Africa’s healthcare system, one that will shape the future of how healthcare is delivered in our country.

At SAMDP, we break down what this means and why it matters.

12 March was World Kidney Day.

Chronic kidney disease often progresses silently.

As practitioners, we can prioritise:

• Routine screening for high-risk patients
• Early referral to nephrology services
• Hypertension and diabetes management
• Patient education on risk factors

Early detection saves lives, every day of the year.

A moment of pride for South Africa!

A team of dedicated healthcare professionals in Limpopo has successfully separated conjoined twins in a complex and life-changing procedure.

Led by Professor Nyaweleni Tshifularo, this incredible achievement shows that excellence exists even where resources are limited.

At SAMDP, we proudly celebrate the team behind this life-changing procedure.

This is more than a medical success, it is a story of hope, teamwork and what is possible in South Africa. Read more here: https://samdp.co.za/excellence-in-action-a-historic-surgery/

Beyond World TB Day on 24 March and in the wake of Human Rights Day, the one truth that remains is that South Africa is still losing thousands of lives every year to a disease we know how to prevent and cure.

• 250,000 people fall ill with TB every year
• 50,000+ lives are lost each year
• Thousands of people with TB are never diagnosed or treated
• TB is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV
• TB is preventable, treatable and curable , yet thousands still die

This is not just a health issue. It is a human rights issue. Because the right to health, including access to early diagnosis, treatment, and quality care should never depend on where you live or what you earn. Yet for many South Africans, it still does.
TB is curable, but only if we act early. So, get tested, seek care early and complete your treatment
Ending TB requires more than awareness, it requires action. Get tested today.

Did you know...20 March was Oral Health Day.

Oral health is not isolated from overall health.

Links between oral conditions and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and pregnancy outcomes are well documented.

General practitioners can strengthen care by:

• Incorporating basic oral screening questions
• Encouraging preventive dental visits
• Collaborating with dental professionals
• Identifying early signs of systemic disease

Integrated care improves patient outcomes.
