Yoga is a psychosomatic practice - psychosomatics is a recognised field within medicine that explores the deep connection between the body and the mind.

It acknowledges the inseparability of the mental and physical bodies, meaning, for every sensation, there is a mental fluctuation and a corresponding chemical reaction which we experience.

In other words, every thought you have triggers a chemical response in your body which alters or affects your physical structure, constitution and general health. So, YOU are basically decided by the relentless process of your thoughts.

AND, this is why yoga works so closely with posture, breath, attitude and intention. It trains us so that when a certain awareness or thought arises , it does not affect the body. This is why we take so much care with asanas and pranayama in yoga. We are creating resilience against the impact of thesemental fluctuations which you probably don’t even always realise you are having.

When last did you bend backwards?

Not just stretch — but actually move your spine into extension, with control & awareness?

Most of our lives happen in a forwards motion-
phones, desks, driving, thinking, doing.
We fold in on ourselves… and slowly lose access to the full intelligence of the body…

But fortunately with yoga, we practice movement in all directions —because your body isn’t designed for access on one plane, and from there we don’t only open the spaces which have become tense, tight and forgotten, but begin to tap into physical intelligence and discover what is possible for your body & mind.

Yoga is more than just physical postures - it’s a path that promotes union with life, on all levels

Most of us can agree that we usually fail on the first principle… 👉

BUT, Fortunately for us , it’s a path of practice and not just the physical kind! Cultivating a good mind and a good body takes effort & a whole lot of awareness.

When we use asana or posture as a way to observe the self, it begins to show where there is both tension & resistance in the physical body & the mind

It shows us where the breath can’t move freely or access easily

So when tension & tightness arise, rather than forcing, by holding steady & comfortable posture, we apply the concepts of sthira and sukha — steadiness without force, & ease without collapse

This is then when the asana becomes a tool for svādhyāya — self-observation

The goal is not to conquer the posture,
You’re simply here to feel yourself in it and as we lessen in rigidity of mind with practice, the body follows

It’s an interesting process - one that requires patience & consistency 🖤
