Emotions vs. Feelings: Why the Difference Matters
For a long time, I treated emotions and feelings as the same thing. But learning to separate them changed how I show up in life and work.
Emotions are raw, automatic responsesālike the surge of anger, joy, or fear that hits you in the moment. Feelings are how we interpret and carry those emotions forwardāhow anger becomes resentment, or joy becomes gratitude.
Hereās why it matters:
ā¼ If we donāt distinguish them, emotions can hijack our decisions.
ā¼ If we donāt acknowledge them, feelings can linger unexamined and shape our mindset.
ā¼ If we donāt deal with them, both can quietly dictate our performance, relationships, and resilience.
By noticing the emotion first, I give myself space to respond instead of react. By naming the feeling, I take ownership of how I carry it. That awareness is where growth begins.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed, pause. Ask yourself: What emotion just showed up? And what feeling am I attaching to it? That simple recalculation can change the direction of your dayāand your life.
