ROOT CANAL
A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected or dying nerve tissue and bacteria from the inside of a tooth, saving it from extraction:
Procedure
A dentist or endodontist numbs the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthetic, then removes the infected pulp from the tooth's canals. The space is cleaned, disinfected, filled with a permanent material, and sealed. The chewing surface of the tooth may be restored with a filling or crown.
Pain
Most people experience little to no pain during a root canal, as the pain comes from the infection, not the treatment. Some tenderness is normal after the procedure, and can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication.
Alternatives
Alternatives to a root canal include extracting the tooth, leaving it untreated, or replacing it with a dental implant, bridge, or removable partial denture.
Prevention
Brushing your teeth after meals, flossing daily, and having regular dental checkups can help prevent the need for a root canal.
