SBRI's Mandela Day initiative was about more than 67 minutes - it was a day of giving and community building! 💚

We partnered with the Executive Mayor's Office, the Ward Councillor's office, and the Department of Social Development to bring health awareness and support to the Thembalethu Old Age Home in Mdantsane. It was a day filled with gratitude and joy, leaving a lasting impression on both residents and staff. A special thank you to our incredible team for their personal contributions and to our partners for making this day a success!

Meet the newest addition to the SBRI team for today's , Dr. Ntsika Alungile Fileyo, our experienced Principal Investigator! 🩺

Dr. Fileyo is a qualified Medical Doctor with a strong background in both clinical work and research. After completing his MBChB degree at UKZN and gaining valuable experience in both clinical and research roles, we're thrilled to have him back at SBRI. He brings a passion for his work and a deep commitment to the team.

Did you know? 🤔 Dr. Fileyo also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and is a qualified Occupational Medical Practitioner.

And for a fun fact: He's a huge wildlife fan and loves spending his weekends on safari! 🦒🦓 Welcome back, Dr. Fileyo! We're excited to have you with us.

Nurses Make a Difference! 🩺💙 Our team has been busy, busy, busy!

Today, we’re throwing it back to Nurses Day (12 May 2025) where our team celebrated by giving back in a meaningful way: spending the day with the young girls of Lukhanyo Primary School. We distributed sanitary pads and toiletries, while leading open, informative discussions on menstrual health and hygiene.

It was a day dedicated to empowering the next generation with knowledge, confidence, and the resources they need to thrive. 🌸✨

On Women’s Day, the SBRI team came together in style - rocking elegant black dresses and traditional doeks - to celebrate the strength, beauty, and resilience of women. The day was filled with connection, joy, and a special touch of self-care as each woman was gifted with a pamper pack. ✨

As part of our Women’s Month celebrations, we will also host the Empower Her Women’s Day Workshop at NU 15, Mdantsane on the 22nd of August - creating a safe and engaging space to equip young women with knowledge and awareness around critical issues such as gender-based violence, reproductive health, and HIV vulnerability. 💪🏽💜

Our team is honoured to have joined Gilead Sciences in Kigali, Rwanda in July 2025. The
dinner, including all of the investigators who worked on the Purpose-1 HIV Pre-exposure prophylaxis trial, was a beautiful celebration of the trial results and provided us an opportunity to network and engage with the Gilead Sciences team.

We were once again reminded that we are part of a global research community that strives everyday to find groundbreaking innovations to improve the health and wellbeing of our people.
