ADHD is diagnosed too much.

That’s a myth!⁵ᶠ More children are diagnosed now but that is because healthcare practitioners have a growing awareness of the condition.⁵ᶠ When ADHD is treated, quality of life increases. The chances of substance abuse, poor academic performance, and mental health issues, such as depression, are lowered.⁵ᶠ
Talk to your healthcare provider for more information about ADHD treatment available from Adcock Ingram.

Even though public awareness of ADHD has grown, many common myths persist and continue the stigma associated with this condition.¹ᵇ Let's talk about them because when we face ADHD together, we can turn stigma into strength.

Why is ADHD underdiagnosed in women?³ᶜ

Women with ADHD don’t tend to receive a diagnosis until their late 30s or early 40s and there appear to be several reasons for this:
💡 Symptoms can be subtle and ADHD symptoms and behaviours in young girls aren’t always obvious
💡 ADHD symptoms in females can present as other issues. In fact, healthcare providers may diagnose females with mood disorders like anxiety or depression rather than ADHD
💡 ADHD in women may develop later although researchers agree that more evidence is needed to prove this

Does this sound at all like you? Chat to your healthcare provider – it’s time to enjoy a good start to every day!

ADHD isn’t a real condition. That’s a myth!⁵ᵇ As ADHD cannot be diagnosed with a blood or brain test, the myth perpetuates that ADHD isn’t a real condition. Let’s bust this myth for good!

✅ A disorder is a disorder when it impairs daily activities, and
ADHD can do just that. There is a lot of evidence that proves just how ADHD impacts mood, social ability, and capacity to perform well in school or at work.
✅ It is hereditary. ADHD is a condition that tends to run in families.
✅ The brain of a person with ADHD looks different to those without ADHD.

Let’s talk about ADHD and children

Studies suggest that, worldwide, around 5 out of every 100 children and adolescents will have ADHD, and in approximately half of them, symptoms will persist into adulthood.³

School-going children are juggling so many day-to-day demands from exams, to projects, social events and sporting meets. Does your child present with any of these features of ADHD²?*
✅ Doesn’t seem to pay attention, lacks attention to detail and makes careless mistakes
✅ Is easily distracted during tasks, work and play
✅ Is disorganised
✅ Seems reluctant to participate in activities that require sustained mental effort (e.g., reading, following lessons or
✅ Appears forgetful (e.g., misses appointments)

Help your child enjoy a good start to every day. Chat to a health care provider for an assessment about ADHD treatment from Adcock Ingram.

*Remember that of course, all of these behaviours can be normal and everybody experiences them from time to time. Also different people are affected differently by ADHD, and so the presentation varies from person to person and also depending on age.²

What does ADHD look like?

Different people are affected differently by ADHD, and so the presentation varies from person to person and depending on age.²
✅ Inattention may manifest as mind wandering while performing a task, giving up on tasks quickly and being disorganised.
✅ Hyperactivity may manifest as inappropriate behaviour, such as not being able to stay seated when required to, being overactive and inappropriately energetic, fidgeting, tapping and being overtalkative.
✅ Impulsivity (poor self-control) refers to making decisions or behaving in a particular way without giving any thought to the effects or consequences of that.

Children with ADHD are hyperactive.

That’s a myth!⁵ᶜ A child with ADHD may have trouble sitting still but there are three behavioural patterns at the heart of ADHD⁵ᶜ:
1. Predominantly inattentive – these kids struggle to pay attention and finish tasks
2. Hyperactive-impulsive – these children may act without thinking, interrupt and fidget
3. Combined – this is when both above behaviours are present in equal measure

If you want to know more about ADHD, talk to your healthcare provider for more information about ADHD and ADHD treatment available from Adcock Ingram.

Even though public awareness of ADHD has grown, many common myths persist and continue the stigma associated with this condition.1b Let's talk about them because when we face ADHD together, we can turn stigma into strength.

Why treat ADHD?

The purpose of treating ADHD, especially for children, is to enable them to achieve their full developmental potential by optimising academic performance, family and social interactions, participation in leisure activities, and how they feel about themselves and their place in the world.⁴

Because people with ADHD are all different, a treatment plan should be tailored specifically to each individual, taking into considerations the predominant symptoms and their severity, co-occurring conditions, age, family and social circumstances, and preferences of the person with ADHD and their family.²

Do you think that ADHD is just a childhood condition?

Let’s bust the myth! Attention deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that is commonly diagnosed during early childhood, but can often persist throughout adolescence and into adulthood.¹ However, ADHD is not always diagnosed during childhood or adolescence, and so the actual number of adults with ADHD symptoms is probably more than predicted by childhood ADHD, and appears to be closer to around 7 out of every 100 people.³
