Resistance: why rotating products is critical

Parasite resistance develops when the same control products are used repeatedly over time.

Risks:
• Reduced effectiveness of treatments
• Increased parasite burdens
• Higher production losses
• Limited future treatment options

Prevention:
• Rotate active ingredients regularly
• Dose animals accurately based on weight
• Avoid unnecessary treatments
• Use a strategic parasite control plan
• Review control programmes with your veterinarian

Resistance is costly, prevention protects long-term productivity.

For assistance with parasite management, contact Dr Johan Barkhuizen on 076 187 4243.

Diseases spread by standing water and mud

Wet and muddy conditions significantly increase disease pressure on farms during the rainy season.

Risks:
• Foot infections and lameness
• Mastitis and teat contamination
• Diarrhoea in calves and lambs
• Skin infections and contaminated wounds
• Increased parasite exposure

Prevention:
• Improve drainage where possible
• Provide clean, dry resting areas
• Reduce prolonged exposure to mud
• Monitor animals closely for early signs
• Treat infections promptly

Good management during wet conditions reduces losses and long-term damage.

Biosecurity basics for farms

Following recent Foot and Mouth outbreaks in the Waterberg, biosecurity is your most effective defence against contagious disease.

Risks:
• Rapid spread of highly contagious diseases
• Introduction of disease via animals, vehicles, or people
• Long-term movement restrictions and financial losses

Prevention:
• Limit unnecessary animal, vehicle and visitor movement
• Quarantine new or returning animals before mixing
• Disinfect footwear, equipment and handling facilities
• Avoid sharing equipment between farms
• Keep accurate animal movement records

Strong biosecurity protects your herd, your neighbours and the wider district.

For professional guidance, contact Dr Johan Barkhuizen on 076 187 4243.

Yesterday, Dr Johan Barkhuizen from Veld en Kraal Veeartsenydienste and other private veterinarians hosted a valuable Foot and Mouth Disease information and question session in Modimolle.

Farmers and role players gained important insight into the current Foot and Mouth Disease situation, including legislation, practical biosecurity measures and challenges at the livestock/wildlife interface. The session also provided an open platform for discussion and questions, empowering farmers with the knowledge needed to protect their farms and act proactively.

Thank you to Waterbergskool vir CVO for the use of the venue and their warm hospitality.

A special word of thanks to the speakers and institutions represented for their contributions and expertise:
Dr Edward Sinthumule & Dr Karli Opperman, State Veterinary Services
Brig. van Staden, South African Police Service (SAPD)
Adv. JJ Venter, legislative and legal perspective

Vrotpootjie in Kleinveë

• Kreupelheid of loop moeilik
• Swelling of rooiheid tussen die kloutjies
• Onaangename reuk van die kloutjies

Voorkoming en behandeling:
• Hou stalle en krale skoon en droog
• Knip kloutjies gereeld

Wees waaksaam hierdie nat seisoen!

• Poor growth and weight gain
• Dehydration or lethargy

Prevention & care:
• Maintain clean housing and feeding areas
• Avoid overcrowding
• Speak to your vet about coccidiostat treatment if needed

Early attention can save your kids and prevent severe losses. Regular monitoring is key!

We urge every farmer, worker and stakeholder to take this situation seriously and to comply fully with quarantine regulations, movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.

If you notice any suspicious symptoms in your livestock including salivation, mouth lesions, lameness, or blisters, do not move animals and act immediately.

Dr Johan Barkhuizen from Veld en Kraal Veeartsenydienste is available to assist with diagnosis, guidance and treatment support where applicable. Early reporting is critical to protect your herd and the wider agricultural community. Get in touch with him on 076 187 4243.
