It’s official—our chick (pictured in this video) has taken flight! After five years in the , we’re thrilled with how this season has played out, with one strong chick surviving and leaving the nest. Now, as nature takes its course, the pair have abandoned the site, and we expect them to return when the next breeding season begins around April.

In the meantime, we’ll be conducting repairs and maintenance at the site to ensure optimal conditions for the next season. From fixing infrastructure to maintaining live monitoring systems, our goal is to continue improving the efforts for the Bearded Vulture.

We’re also proud to announce that Afraceuticals will be contributing to the costs of the project in 2025—including maintenance, repair expenses, and data operating costs. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to , , and protecting Africa’s natural heritage. This project is part of our 1% for the Planet commitment, where we dedicate a portion of our revenue to protecting and preserving the environment. We believe that businesses should be a force for good, and through this initiative, we’re ensuring that conservation remains at the heart of what we do.

We’re honoured to spotlight Penane, one of the incredible community leaders we work with in Lesotho to harvest the precious Pelargonium sidoides root. Since 2015, Penane has been at the forefront of sustainable harvesting, blending his expertise in environmental history with his passion for community upliftment.

With a heart for environmentalism, Penane's simple yet powerful mission is to ensure people treat Pelargonium sidoides with the care it deserves so future generations can continue to benefit from its remarkable properties.

He works tirelessly across various regions in Lesotho, training others in sustainable harvesting methods, including cleaning and sorting techniques, while sharing knowledge gained from his Bachelor of Arts in Environmental History from the University of Lesotho.

For Penane, this plant isn’t just a resource—it’s hope. It provides opportunities for his community and creates a ripple effect of wellness, from the mountains of Lesotho to the rest of the world. “This root gives people hope,” he says. “It’s up to us to ensure sustainability, from the Department of Environment to every village.”

Bearded Vulture Project Update: Preparing to take flight 🦅🌿
We’re thrilled to share an exciting update on our Bearded Vulture Conservation Project, part of our 1% for the Planet commitment. Since our last post, the surviving chick has grown remarkably, transforming from a fragile ball of fluff into a confident juvenile preparing for its first flight.

Key Highlights Since Our Last Update:
The chick has reached key development milestones, including stronger flight feathers and improved mobility, a sign it’s nearly ready to leave the nest.

Behavioural Insights: Observing its interactions with the parent birds has provided valuable insights into natural chick-rearing behaviours, helping refine conservation practices.

As we approach January, a critical milestone awaits—the chick’s first flight. This pivotal moment will determine its independence and survival. Watching this journey unfold is a reminder of why conservation matters, and we’re incredibly proud to be part of the effort to protect this majestic species.
