Today's question: "How to convince someone with mental health problems (depression) that they need to see a Dr for some help without them feeling like you are saying they are crazy?"

While every situation is different, here is some general advice:
- Make sure they know you are coming from a caring place, not a judgemental place. Emphasise that you care about them.
- Be vulnerable yourself; open up about your own or a close family member's mental health problems or emotional difficulties. This gives the person a sense of safety to be vulnerable with you too.
- Raise specific examples about their behaviour that concern you. For example "I've noticed that you hardly smile anymore and only want to spend time by yourself. It makes me worry about you." Or "I've noticed that you're losing weight and drinking more than usual. I'm worried that you're not okay."
- Be prepared to listen, but don't force them to talk if they're not ready. It might take a few conversations before they are willing to engage with you.
- Offer practical support when they are willing and ready to seek help. Offer to go with them, to make the appointment for them, to look after their kids while they're going, suggest someone (a friend or family member) who has sought help for depression that they can talk to before taking the step to seek help for themselves.
