27 March 2026 was an evening filled with joy and rich narrative stories from a cross-section of women who gathered to receive awards in recognition of their impactful work in various categories in South Africa. The guest speaker, Professor Tinuade Adekunbi Ojo from the University of Johannesburg, delivered an inspiring speech, encouraging women to strive for more and make the world a better place for humanity. She commenced by quoting an African proverb, “If you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” She further stated, “Tonight, we gather not merely to celebrate achievements, but to honor impact – the kind that reshapes communities, disrupts inequality, and builds new possibilities for posterity. We are here to recognize women who are not waiting for change, but who are driving it – boldly, relentlessly, and often against tremendous odds. In the context of South Africa, the story of women changing the world is deeply historical, profoundly political, and unmistakably present. Women in South Africa are not just participating in change – they are redefining the terms of engagement. They are shifting leadership from domination to inclusion, and from extraction to sustainability. Tonight, we celebrate women who have not only kept pace, but who have set the pace. In the words of Maya Angelou, who eloquently captured the spirit we celebrate tonight, “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” The convenor of the Women Changing the World Awards in South Africa, Ncazelo Mlilo, thanked the guest speaker for her presence and support, as well as for her poignant and candid speech, which encouraged women to continue dismantling inequalities that limit women’s full participation in society.
