IGNORING HIGH-RISK PATIENTS: A SILENT EPIDEMIC!

In South Africa, countless elderly individuals face a hidden yet devastating threat: osteoporosis. Despite being at high risk of fractures, many remain undiagnosed and untreated, raising serious ethical concerns about the value we place on their health and quality of life.

Left unchecked, osteoporosis isn't just a "silent" disease—it can lead to crippling fractures, loss of independence, and even death. Our society cannot afford to overlook the needs of these vulnerable citizens simply because their condition may not have obvious symptoms.

It's time to break this cycle of neglect. Assessment, early diagnosis, and proactive treatment are key to preserving their well-being and dignity. Let’s raise awareness and advocate for change!

My Story

I am a registered dietician and I have been practicing independently for the past nine years. I have always had a special interest in pediatric and neonatal nutrition but it was only when my firstborn became very sick struggling with recurrent chest infections, anemia, allergies and multiple hospitalizations that I realized how hard it was to deal with a child’s health issues as a mother and not only as a health professional.

Through personal experience and working closely with specialist physicians over the past five years I have developed a deep knowledge and skill in managing all kinds of nutrition conditions including gastro-esophageal-reflux, allergies, picky eating, behavioral disorders, failure to thrive, various gut issues, artificial feeding, HIV, obesity, epilepsy, liver conditions, insulin resistance, PCOS, as well as various chronic-, lifestyle-related and surgical conditions.

As a trained health professional, I recognize that every individual has specific nutritional needs. I assess every patient's unique needs, health status, nutritional requirements and living conditions and formulate a suitable nutrition plan accordingly. Unlike some fad diets and gimmicks, I use evidence based nutrition (EBN) to tailor personalized nutrition care. Rendering excellent service, building good relations with my patients and always making the best ethical decisions is what I strive for.
