Mind-Brain Insight # 12 – What is brain agility?

Brain agility, also known in educational terms as midline crossing, is the ability of all brain regions to communicate well across the corpus callosum and neural networks to function as one integrated system at optimum levels. Lack of brain agility will result in thinking, learning, and working longer, slower, and harder.

Why is brain fitness important?

Optimizing brain agility will result in ease, speed, and flexibility in learning and thinking.

It develops higher-order thinking skills.

It helps you learn, pay attention, and integrate sensory information.

It helps you coordinate your body and brain and promotes body awareness.

It increases hand-eye coordination skills like spelling and writing.

It promotes tracking with your eyes from left to right which is a critical skill when reading.

Brain-mind Insight # 7 – Cognitive Flexibility and why it's important
What is cognitive flexibility?

Cognitive flexibility, also known as mental flexibility is your ability to easily switch between different concepts, or think about multiple concepts simultaneously, or shift a course of thought or action according to the changing demands of a situation.

Why is cognitive flexibility important?
Cognitive flexibility is crucial for success, employability, and competitiveness in your professional life. It allows you to:
• be fluid to adapt to changing situations
• easily move horizontally and vertically across different roles
• interact easily with people who have different opinions, cultures, beliefs, races, and genders.
• think divergently and convergently at the same time
• solve complex problems effectively
• learn new things quickly
• consider multiple perspectives simultaneously
• adjust your thinking in flexible ways that can help you break from old habits and mindsets.
• "think fast on your feet"
• respond appropriately to new or unexpected situations.

Mental flexibility is a competence you develop. You are not born mentally flexible.
