Healthy habits established in adolescence, such as staying physically active and eating a healthy diet can put you on the path to good heart health.

Studies have shown hardening of the arteries due to plaque build-up, can start developing as early as adolescence. Hardened arteries block blood flow and can lead to heart attacks or strokes.

At Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital we are here to help you navigate the challenges and support your journey to ensure your heart remains healthy.

Your hands come into contact with countless shared surfaces every day. Most germs are invisible – but their impact isn’t.

Washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water, taking enough time to clean all areas, is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection.

Make hand hygiene part of your everyday routine. It protects you and everyone around you.

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT can offer quick, convenient health information, but they can’t – and shouldn’t – replace professional medical advice.

Your symptoms are only one part of the picture. While AI can help you understand information and prepare for a consultation, only a trained healthcare professional can assess symptoms in context, determine urgency and recommend the right care.

Speaking to an experienced clinician ensures you receive personalised, accurate care – helping to avoid misdiagnosis, delayed treatment and unnecessary anxiety.

Dr Charl van Loggerenberg, General Manager: Emergency Medicine at Life Healthcare, explains why expert diagnosis still matters.

We were honoured to be part of a special wellness session at Hopeville Primary School for Grade 1 Grandparents Day

It was a heartwarming day of learning, care, and community connection as young learners took part in fun, interactive sessions on hand hygiene and healthy eating habits. Their enthusiasm was a reminder that healthy habits start young.

Parents and grandparents also received free wellness screenings, including blood pressure and glucose checks, highlighting the importance of preventative healthcare for the whole family.

Together, schools, families, and wellness partners can build stronger, healthier communities.

Do you know what your blood pressure reading really means?

Your blood pressure naturally rises and falls throughout the day, especially during physical activity. But when it remains elevated over time, it can become a serious concern. High blood pressure, or hypertension, often has no obvious symptoms, which is why it’s sometimes called a “silent” risk.

Left unmanaged, it can increase your chances of serious health complications such as stroke, heart attack and long-term organ damage.

Understanding your numbers is a simple but powerful step in protecting your health. It can help you recognise when something isn’t quite right and prompt you to seek medical advice early.

We spoke to Dr Nerisha Tathiah, Life Healthcare Regional Clinical Manager, who shared practical insights about blood pressure risks and how to manage it effectively.

Do you live with daily joint pain?
Joint issues often develop gradually, starting with stiffness, mild aches or changes in how you move. When discomfort begins to affect your daily life, it may be time to seek care. A GP can assess your symptoms and refer you to an orthopaedic specialist if needed.
Don’t ignore the signs - early intervention can make all the difference.

Listening to your body, even when changes feel small or easy to dismiss, is one of the most important steps in preventative care.

Prevention starts with awareness: noticing early signs, asking questions and seeking professional medical advice sooner rather than later. Acting early can make a meaningful difference, support timely care and help protect your long-term health and well-being.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, trust that instinct. Consult a GP or physician to guide your next steps.

The word “nuclear” in a medical setting can be daunting. But for Dr Bruce Young, a nuclear medicine physician working alongside Life Healthcare, it is often the most valuable way to help treating doctors get clarity and define tailored cancer management plans with their patients.

In this interview, Dr Young explains how advanced scans like PET-CT work, why medical radiation is carefully controlled and safe and how these technologies help doctors better understand cancer and other diseases. At its core, nuclear medicine is about insight, giving your healthcare team the information they need to guide treatment decisions with confidence.

For patients and families navigating difficult diagnoses, that clarity can make all the difference. Kidneys are your body’s natural filtration system - removing waste, balancing fluids and helping keep you healthy. If you’re at higher risk for kidney disease, or your doctor has a concern, they may request kidney screening tests to check your kidney function. Kidney disease often has no early symptoms. Testing helps detect problems early, when treatment works best.

Speak to your doctor about your kidney health.
