What is a Nerve-Sparing Radical Prostatectomy?
A nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the prostate gland while carefully preserving the nerves responsible for erections. This approach is often used for men with prostate cancer who want to maintain sexual function as much as possible after surgery.

✅ The goal is to treat the cancer effectively while protecting quality of life.
✅ It requires skilled surgical technique because the nerves are delicate and close to the prostate.
✅ Recovery includes follow-up with your urologist, and many men regain erectile function over time.

If you or a loved one is considering prostate surgery, discuss the nerve-sparing option with your urologist Dr Paul to understand the benefits and what to expect.

Kidney-Friendly Foods 🥙

Eating the right foods can help support your kidney function and overall urinary health. Here are some kidney-friendly options to include in your diet:
- Berries: Blueberries, strawberries and cranberries are packed with antioxidants.
- Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale and Swiss chard provide vitamins while being low in sodium.
- Fatty Fish: Salmon, mackerel and sardines are rich in omega-3s, which support heart and kidney health.
- Garlic & Onions: Natural flavour enhancers that help reduce sodium intake.
- Red Bell Peppers: High in vitamins A, C and fibre, and low in potassium.

Tip: Combine a kidney-friendly diet with hydration, regular exercise and routine tests with your urologist, Dr Paul, to maintain healthy kidneys and urinary function.

Many people think they’ll know if their kidneys are failing because symptoms will appear early, but the truth is quite different. Kidney disease often causes no noticeable symptoms until the later stages, which means that around 90% of kidney function can be lost before you even notice a problem. Routine blood tests, like eGFR, and urine tests can detect issues early, giving you the best chance to protect your kidneys and prevent serious complications, such as kidney failure or the need for dialysis. This National Kidney Month, remember that early detection is key, and regular monitoring with your urologist Dr Paul can make all the difference.

Did You Know?
A healthy kidney contains about 1 million tiny filters called nephrons, and each one works constantly to keep your blood clean and your body in balance. These hardworking filters remove waste, balance fluids and support healthy blood pressure, often without us even noticing.

Tip: Protect your nephrons by staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and keeping up with routine tests with your urologist, Dr Paul.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) can develop quickly, often without obvious symptoms. Traditional markers like creatinine usually rise 24–36 hours after injury, and urine output can be influenced by fluids, diuretics, or obstruction, making early detection tricky. Biomarkers, however, allow clinicians to identify kidney stress or damage early, giving a critical window to prevent AKI from progressing.

1️⃣ Normal → Stress:Kidneys are under strain but not yet damaged. Early biomarker changes here allow preventive action before true injury occurs.
2️⃣ Damage → KDIGO 1:Minor injury begins. Creatinine starts rising, and urine output may change slightly; early intervention can stop progression.
3️⃣ KDIGO 2 → KDIGO 3:Moderate to severe injury. Significant creatinine rise and reduced urine output signal the need for therapeutic optimisation to prevent lasting damage.
4️⃣ End-stage → Death:Without timely intervention, AKI can progress to kidney failure or death.

Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Guidelines are used. By understanding these stages and acting during the early windows, clinicians can prevent complications, optimise treatment, and improve patient outcomes.

Top 3 Lifestyle Tips for Kidney Health

Keeping your kidneys healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference:
1️⃣ Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water helps your kidneys flush out toxins and prevent kidney stones.
2️⃣ Eat a Balanced Diet: Limit salt and processed foods, and include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains to support kidney function.
3️⃣ Exercise Regularly: Physical activity improves circulation, helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces blood pressure, all of which protect your kidneys.

Combine these habits with regular check-ups and routine tests with your urologist, Dr Paul, to detect issues early and keep your kidneys working at their best.

Are your kidneys working for you or against you?
Your kidneys do a lot every single day, filtering waste, balancing fluids, and supporting healthy blood pressure. Yet early kidney problems often show no symptoms, making it easy to overlook issues.

This National Kidney Month, take charge of your kidney health:
💧 Stay hydrated: water helps flush out toxins.
🩺 Get routine tests: eGFR and creatinine can catch problems early.
💙 Listen to your body: don’t ignore swelling, changes in urination, or persistent fatigue.

Make sure your kidneys are working for you, not against you. Proactive care can make all the difference.

Silent signs of kidney damage 🩺

Kidney disease is often called a “silent” condition because it can progress without noticeable symptoms. That’s why it’s so important to be aware of subtle warning signs. Watch out for:
- Changes in urination: foamy, dark, or bloody urine.
- Persistent fatigue: feeling unusually tired or weak.
- Swelling: in hands, feet, ankles or around the eyes.
- High blood pressure: difficult to control with lifestyle or medication.
- Back or side pain: mild discomfort that doesn’t go away.

Routine blood tests, like eGFR and urine tests, can detect problems early, often before serious damage occurs, giving you the best chance to protect your kidney health. This National Kidney Month, take charge and make kidney care a priority with your urologist, Dr Paul.

A simple blood test can reveal so much about your body, often before symptoms appear. It provides insight into:
• Kidneys – eGFR and creatinine levels show how well your kidneys are filtering
• Prostate – PSA levels help monitor prostate health
• Sugar control – blood glucose levels indicate risk for diabetes
• Heart health – cholesterol and lipid profile can signal cardiovascular risk
• Overall well-being – red and white blood cell counts reveal general health

Pro tip: Regular blood tests, combined with guidance from your urologist, Dr Paul, help detect problems early, monitor your ongoing health and give you peace of mind. Taking control of your health starts with knowing your numbers!

Understanding your urine test can help catch problems early. Here’s what the numbers mean:
🔹 Blood (Hematuria): Normally 0 RBCs/HPF - higher levels may indicate infection, kidney stones, or prostate issues
🔹 Protein (Proteinuria): Normally negative - small amounts can signal kidney problems
🔹 Leukocytes (WBCs): Normally 0–5 WBCs/HPF - higher counts suggest infection or inflammation
🔹 Nitrites: Normally negative - positive results may indicate a urinary tract infection
🔹 Glucose: Normally negative - presence can indicate uncontrolled blood sugar

Tip: If any of these markers are abnormal, don’t ignore them. Early evaluation with your urologist Dr Paul can help detect and manage underlying issues.

• Peace of mind – A normal PSA gives reassurance that your prostate is healthy
• Better outcomes – Early intervention for any problem improves treatment success
• Monitor changes – Regular testing helps track your prostate health over time

Don’t wait for symptoms. Regular PSA testing with your urologist, Dr Paul, helps you stay proactive and take control of your health.
