We recently had the privilege of being part of the multidisciplinary team during an awake craniotomy performed by Dr Wiese, Neurosurgeon at Kloof Mediclinic. 🧠
An awake craniotomy allows surgeons to monitor and protect essential brain functions during surgery by actively engaging the patient.
As Occupational Therapists, our role involved completing a thorough pre-operative assessment of the patient’s motor skills, sensory function, and basic cognition to establish a clear baseline.
During the procedure, we re-tested these functions in real time, providing immediate feedback to assist the surgeon in identifying and preserving critical areas of the brain.
This collaborative approach helps optimise surgical outcomes while prioritising patient safety and functional independence.
