Mental Health

There has been a growing conversation around mental health, its causes and early diagnosis. With the advent of technology we've seen the conversation reaching new heights with celebrities and professionals alike coming out of the woods with their own stories.

Mental health problems affect about 1 in 10 children and young people. They include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives.

Alarmingly, however, 70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.

The emotional wellbeing of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.

Most women do not have any signs or symptoms of a precancer. In many women with early-stage cervical cancer, symptoms are typically seen. In women with advanced and metastatic cancers, the symptoms may be more severe depending on the tissues and organs to which the disease has spread. The cause of a symptom may be a different medical condition that is not cancer, which is why women need to seek medical care if they have a new symptom that does not go away.

Any of the following could be signs or symptoms of cancer:

Blood spots or light bleeding between or following periods

Menstrual bleeding that is longer and heavier than usual

Bleeding after in*******se, douching, or a pelvic examination

Increased vaginal discharge

Pain during sexual in*******se

Bleeding after menopause

Unexplained, persistent pelvic and/or back pain

Any of these symptoms should be reported to your doctor. If these symptoms appear, it is important to talk with your doctor about them even if they appear to be symptoms of other, less serious conditions. The earlier precancerous cells or cancer is found and treated, the better the chance that the cancer can be prevented or cured.

Breast Cancer

There are many types of breast cancer. The most common types are ductal carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, and invasive lobular carcinoma.

The type of breast cancer is determined by the specific cells in the breast that are affected. Most breast cancers are carcinomas. Carcinomas are tumors that start in the epithelial cells that line organs and tissues throughout the body. Sometimes, an even more specific term is used. For example, most breast cancers are a type of carcinoma called adenocarcinoma, which starts in cells that make up glands (glandular tissue). Breast adenocarcinomas start in the ducts (the milk ducts) or the lobules (milk-producing glands).

There are other, less common, types of breast cancers, too, such as sarcomas, phyllodes, Paget disease, and angiosarcomas which start in the cells of the muscle, fat, or connective tissue.

Sometimes a single breast tumor can be a combination of different types. And in some very rare types of breast cancer, the cancer cells may not form a lump or tumor at all.

When a biopsy is done to find out the specific type of breast cancer, the pathologist will also check if the cancer has spread into the surrounding tissues.

Kids get sick. A LOT! This can be quite a stressful experience for many parents, especially because the child cannot exactly explain what is wrong. Among the most common of these illnesses is an upper respiratory infection, or URI.

An upper respiratory infection, also called a URI, is an infection of the nose, sinuses, or throat. URIs are spread by coughs, sneezes, and direct contact. The common cold is the most frequent kind of URI. The flu and sinus infections are other kinds of URIs.

Almost all URIs are caused by viruses, so antibiotics will not cure them. But you can do things at home to help your child get better. With most URIs, your child should feel better in 4 to 10 days.

WHAT IS FEMALE UROLOGY?
The subspecialty of female urology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of those urinary tract disorders most prevalent in females. These include urinary incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse, voiding dysfunction, recurrent urinary tract infection, urethral syndrome and interstitial cystitis. Expert evaluation of these conditions includes a complete history and physical exam. Urodynamics (bladder function test) and imaging studies may be required to fully evaluate the urinary tracts. Additional bladder studies such as cystoscopy may be necessary.

Understanding Endometriosis

Endometriosis is an incurable but manageable gynecological condition.
It occurs when endometrial implants, comprised of tissue normally found within the uterus, are present in other areas of the body.

As the tissue continues to thicken, break down, respond to menstrual cycle hormones, and bleed during the menstrual cycle, endometriosis forms deep inside the body.

Scar tissue and adhesions form, and this can cause organ fusion and anatomical changes.

Dysmenorrhea

The medical term for menstrual cramps, which are caused by uterine contractions. Primary dysmenorrhea refers to common menstrual cramps, while secondary dysmenorrhea results from a disorder in the reproductive organs. Both types can be treated.

It is often important to be able to differentiate between the two. Here's a brief overview...

Flu shot: Your best bet for avoiding influenza
Getting a flu shot often protects you from coming down with the flu. And although the flu shot doesn't always provide total protection, it's worth getting.

Our Story

At Pearl Med, we believe that though
concessions should be made in medicine, those concessions should not include the humanity of
our profession. We believe in putting back the “family” into Family Medicine.

We
believe that second only to the personal experience of the patient, the patient’s
family are the ones who have a visceral understanding of what the patient goes
through on a daily basis. Were such a family structure to be developed between patient and doctor, the doctor would be more able to aid the patient in the fight
against chronic ailments.

At our medical centre you are not just a patient, you are our family. We believe in walking your road to whatever health goal you have with you.
