Hello from the GGPC. We are a group of General Practitioners with a passion for giving our patients excellent care. We know the COVID epidemic has been a scary time for most of us. Faced with a brand new disease, there are so many unknowns. As people battle to come to terms with this and every bit of news and fake news is shared, we are faced with an information overload. It’s hard to know what can be trusted.

We are all on the “Corona-coaster”. Just when we are enjoying closeness with family and a slightly slower pace of life, the reality that we are in the midst of a pandemic hits us afresh! Add to this the economic implications of lockdown and it’s a perfect recipe for emotional turmoil and vulnerability.

We would like to help you navigate these trying times. We have a sense of the questions our patients are asking and we would like to try and answer them. Our pledge is that we will strive to provide the the best information we can with the evidence available with the disclaimer that the field of COVID-19 is a continually changing one.

We can’t be locked away forever so let’s learn how to be safe together! Look for the VOICES THAT CARE hashtag to find posts to help you do just that! -Karin van der Merwe

Dear Patients

Our collaboration of 150 GP’s has been working on a project of support for the people of South Africa during this time. 30 of our musical GP colleagues got together over the hard lockdown to do something they usually wouldn’t.. Sing! You can see our very own Dr Debbie Earl singing !
We all felt the need to come together to show our patients: we’re all in this with you, as a united front. True Voices that Care.
South Africa now moves into Lockdown 3. Let’s keep up the safety and re-engage in the world at the same time. Let’s exercise our caution and still get out there. Let’s stop the spread of Covid. But let’s remain healthy in general, and continue to look after our wellbeing.
Your doctors are here for you, and as the proud broader community South Africans are, we will prevail!

Contact us if and when you need us during this time.

Dear Patients and Friends of the Parkwood Medical Centre

I thought it is appropriate to send an update to our patients on how we have and will continue to deal with these difficult and unusual times. Our most important imperative is and will continue to be the health, safety and well-being of all our patients, doctors and staff.

All of the doctors are part of various forums dealing with the novel Corona virus. There is a fortune of information that we are exposed to daily – we will continue to monitor the information and take guidance from the various Government and Medical bodies to ensure that we follow best practice.

For those of you who have been to the practice recently you will no doubt have been exposed to the measures detailed below that we have instituted that will unfortunately be with us for the foreseeable future. Although all these measures may seem impersonal and inconvenient, I want to reassure you that we remain available to support and care for all your medical needs.

1. When you call for an appointment there will be telephonic screening. High risk patients or patients with a known Covid 19 contact will be directed to the appropriate centre for testing and you must please not come to the rooms.

2. If you suspect you may be positive for Corona virus or have respiratory symptoms, a fever or malaise please call the rooms first – do not arrive at the rooms unannounced

3. All doctors will be wearing scrubs, masks and goggles.

4. If possible, please arrive wearing your mask. We will provide a mask if you do not have one.

5. Please do not bring extra children or friends to the consultation.

6. When you arrive please announce yourself to the receptionist and return to your car and wait in the car until the previous patient has left.

7. We sanitize the examining room between each patient so there may a small delay between patients.

8. We have removed all magazines and toys from the reception area.

9. We have installed desk-to-ceiling glass screens in the reception for your protection and for the protection of our staff.

As a consequence of the Corona virus the doctors spend many hours every day providing advice over the phone - this is safer for you the patient and the doctor. Most Medical Aids are cognisant of this and have introduced a telephonic consultation rate which they will reimburse if the member has available funds. If not, the onus will fall on the patient to settle the consultation.

Please reach out to us if you need our help. We are all in this together.
