Today was Day 2 of the Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) workshop hosted by one of the Unitaid-funded IMPAACT4HIV project consortium's implementing partners, Paediatric - Adolescent Treatment Africa(PATA), in Pretoria, South Africa.

The three-day workshop focuses on demand creation and policy advocacy for AHD in children under 5 years old. Participants shared insights on The Aurum Institute led-IMPAACT4HIV interventions and the project's geographic scope in the North West, and identified key policy advocacy issues and opportunities for community-led, data-driven dialogues.

Day 2 presentations offered a comprehensive overview of IMPAACT4HIV interventions, covering the project's background, rationale, and target districts and facilities. The expected outcome for Day 2 was to prepare and empower communities and civil society organizations to develop an AHD advocacy agenda and strategy for policy dialogue in the North West.

Through group discussions, participants delved into emerging advocacy issues and action plans, highlighting the importance of Human-Centred Design in addressing AHD. This approach is central to IMPAACT4HIV's efforts to drive evidence-based advocacy and create impactful change.

Yesterday, we announced the launch of IMPAACT4HIV, a Unitaid-funded project dedicated to transforming advanced HIV disease (AHD) care led by The Aurum InstituteThe Aurum Institute. This project will focus on six key countries: Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and South Africa.

It aims to tackle critical challenges in AHD management by enhancing access to low-cost diagnostic, preventive, and treatment tools, integrating care into non-traditional service delivery channels, decentralising services to lower levels of care using human-centred design principles, and ensuring the participation of communities, civil society organisations, and other entities (CCSEs).

Today, our three-day Advanced HIV Disease Workshop, hosted by one of the consortium's implementing partners, Paediatric - Adolescent Treatment Africa (PATA), began in Pretoria, South Africa. The workshop will focus on community-led efforts to raise awareness and advocate for policies benefiting children under 5 years old.

Throughout the sessions, we engaged community and civil society organisations in identifying AHD policy gaps, and emphasising the World Health Organization guidelines. The expected outcome for day one was for communities and civil society organisations to gain a clear understanding of AHD policy gaps and advocacy strategies.

In addition to the presentations, representatives from the Provincial Department of Health, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHIA), and other implementing partners were also in attendance.

We are excited to announce the launch of Impaact4HIV, a Unitaid-funded project dedicated to transforming advanced HIV disease (AHD) care. Our goal is to significantly reduce AIDS-related mortality by enhancing access to early diagnosis of AHD and opportunistic infections, timely initiation of prophylaxis and treatment, and supportive care.

IMPAACT4HIV tackles critical challenges in AHD management by enhancing access to low-cost diagnostic, preventive, and treatment tools, integrating care into non-traditional service delivery channels, decentralizing services to lower levels of care using human-centred design principles to support differentiated, person-centred care, and ensuring the participation of communities, civil societies, and entities (CCSEs). Our approach aligns with Universal Health Coverage initiatives, ensuring better accessibility, treatment adherence, and overall quality of care.

IMPAACT4HIV is implemented by a consortium of six partners: The Aurum Institute (lead), Paediatric - Adolescent Treatment Africa, Market Access Africa, the Centre for Integrated Health Programs, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), and Solidarité Thérapeutique et Initiatives pour la Sante (Solthis).

The project’s focus countries include Cote d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. Alongside this investment, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is leading the THRIVE AHD Project in collaboration with Afrocab and Penta in six countries, and is working in collaboration with Aurum Institute and partners in Nigeria and South Africa.
