Case of the Week: Acute Traumatic Acromioclavicular Joint (ACJ) Dislocation

This week, we’re raising awareness about a fairly common shoulder injury: the acute acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation.
It often occurs in contact sports like rugby, where a direct blow or force is applied to the top of the shoulder.

Surgery in the acute phase is recommended when there is complete joint separation with clear signs of instability. Early surgery helps achieve better cosmetic results and improved functional outcomes.

In our practice, we use a minimally invasive (keyhole/ arthroscopic) technique for primary reconstruction, aiming to restore normal shoulder function within three months after surgery.

Case of the week: Lisfranc injury

A serious midfoot injury that usually happens due to high-energy trauma, such as a car accident or a sports-related incident. It typically occurs when a strong force travels through the foot while it’s pointed downward, leading to damage in the joints and ligaments that stabilize the middle part of the foot.

Surgery (often tailored to the specific injury, or “à la carte”) is usually recommended to restore the stability of the midfoot. The goal is to help you regain proper foot function, reduce long-term pain, and lower the risk of developing arthritis in the affected joints over time.

We performed our first hip arthroscopies at Melomed Richards Bay.
A minimally invasive procedure that allows us to diagnose and treat hip joint pathology using small incisions and specialised camera. It is particularly beneficial for young, active patients experiencing hip pain due to labral tears or femoroacetabular impingement. Compared to open surgery, it offers reduced pain, minimal scarring, and a quicker recovery. When performed early, it can greatly enhance hip function and help prevent long-term joint damage. With proper rehabilitation, most patients return to sports or normal activities within a few months.
