I had a lovely morning with the in a planning session for the upcoming Michael mas Conference. We were asked to come up with the conference theme for the year. We spoke, made art, connected as a group, then made more art together and reflected on everything that emerged.

I was reminded of the power of using creativity to relate, find common ground and work in a generative way that is so uplifting 🎉

I am looking forward to seeing what unfolds at the conference!

"I feel better now that my tissue had colour on it." – A profound reminder from a 12-year-old client.

Art has a way of externalising our inner world—giving form, colour, and texture to emotions that words often fail to capture. In art therapy, what is felt on the inside finds its way onto the page, the clay, the canvas… or even a simple tissue. The weight of emotions shifts as they take shape outside of us, creating space for relief, understanding, and healing.

A beautiful testament to the power of expression.

Sometimes, our minds make connections before we even realize it. Recently, I was captivated by an image of tree tops, viewed from below—a perspective shift that spoke to me deeply.

It reminded me of the conversations I’ve been having with clients about bullying. Bullying is pervasive, from schools to workplaces, even within our closest circles. It’s a huge challenge—one that often feels impossible to tackle alone. But it’s not about facing it alone; it’s about shifting our perspective.

What if, instead of fearing isolation from setting boundaries, we affirmed our worth? Instead of thinking, “If I speak up, I’ll lose friends,” we remind ourselves, “I am worthy of friends who celebrate me as I am.”

Instead of dismissing hurtful behavior with, “They’re only joking,” we assert, “I deserve kindness and respect.”

It’s about grounding ourselves in our own self-worth, standing tall—like those tree tops—rooted in the belief that we deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion.

Let’s choose to see our value from a new perspective, nurturing spaces that honour who we truly are.

Hello All! Happy New Year! I promise, I’m still here. 😊

As I was sitting and thinking about what to share for my first post of 2025, I wanted something uplifting, aesthetically pleasing, and inspiring... but nothing felt quite right. Then I remembered a photo I took at the end of last year – my art trolley, which I’d rushed past while transitioning between a client and an art therapy group. And BOOM – all of my art materials fell to the floor. At that moment, it felt so symbolic. A complete unfolding of everything.

That image has brought me here today. There’s often this expectation that we should feel fresh, motivated, and well-rested after the December break, but that’s not the reality for most of us. So here’s a New Year reminder:

It’s okay to start the year tired.
It’s okay to start the year unsure and unmotivated.
It’s okay to not have an elaborate New Year’s plan.

Wherever you are, you’re exactly where you need to be.

Making a mess features a lot in my practice with patients. We create spaces where we welcome the physical and 'metaphorical' mess. It's to say "bring all of you, no matter however messy it may be, and we journey it together" ❤️

New paper! 'An exploration of the role of mess-making in art psychotherapy'

The study explores the functions and benefits of mess-making in therapy for all clients, regardless of age and stage.

✨ Messy Sand Tray Therapy for Kids ✨

In my sessions, I use messy sand tray therapy to help children express their emotions when words are hard to find. Through playing with sand and toys, they can safely explore their feelings, work through challenges, and find comfort. It’s a creative, fun way to support their emotional healing and self-expression 🌱
