We need more services outside of taverns and spaza shops in our Black neighbourhoods

“For all of this to happen, I had to endure a lot of red tape as – believe it or not – townships still have to abide by apartheid-style bylaws that were never revisited. For instance, they allow for tuckshops and taverns, but it’s way more difficult to start a place where the entire community can learn something. I had to jump through hoops in order to operate a place that would host book clubs, outdoor movie screenings, informal art lessons and lifestyle festivals that would benefit local producers and artists,” says Giba, who recently travelled to Japan to research the latest trends in coffee culture.

But it was having to close his Fashion TV Cafe franchise store because of exorbitant rent increases and overhead costs that inspired him to explore a more affordable concept - mobile shipping containers. '

A lesson here for us on how to lift each other up

'I just had a long conversation with a Tuck shop owner from Somalia down the road from my house and i must say im in AWE!

These guys have revolutionized the tuckshop! Each individual leaving home and in a space of 3 years coming back for 10 male family members brothers, cousins and friends who again come back for brothers cousins and friends!

So this guy says this is how it works. 1 person is given a shop by a relative. This person works until he has paid back the financial worth of the shop till such a time he is given the shop. He proceeds to work towards opening another shop, he finds a new site, he brings a brother to look after the new shop while he works toward finding another shop, then calls a brother to come look after this shop. Fast forward 2 years, he has 3 or 5 shops each brother probably has 3 shops theyve brought in another 6 or 7 brothers.

He says while you pay back the owner of the house. You dont sleep more than 6 hours. No day off, you eat what has been given to you and you wear what is given to you. Every single cent you make goes back to your debt. They have very minimum living costs. They look like they live in poverty or skwaler. But its all part of a bigger plan, a big target in the number of shops or financial gain.

By the time he goes back home to settle down with his wife. He would have uplifted atleast 10 of his people if not more, who will individually do the for another 100.

Money is borrowed within their community at no interest. They eat their own. Buy their owns clothes. Use their own doctors. Money is vigorously sent home for the upkeep of their family.

He says what he doesn't like about SA is how everyone looks down on them. Yet the same person who once swore at him and belittled him. Comes back to borrow meilie meal.

There is a lesson here... The Spiderweb doctrine- uplift and support your own!'
