In the spectrum of health care and not just eyecare, mental health is an area to be considered with most patients.

Personally I have noticed that some children with high refractive errors that grow to be teenagers without correction are generally shy and somewhat tend hold back in conversation and social interactions.

The reality of visual Impairments, from correctable refractive errors to low vision is that it can have a significant impact on the state of one's mental health.

That could range from low self esteem, not feeling like one belongs, to the fear of not being accepted and grieving one's loss of vision.

Refer that patients for further assistance and give a chance for someone to enjoy a good quality of life.

Visual Impairment that's prevalent with age

Presbyopia describes a process that occurs with age, when the crystalline lens inside the eye gradually loses its elasticity, becomes hard and is less flexible .

The loss of being to actively focus resulting to poor near vision.

A common symptom is described as "The Short Arm Syndrome"

Why?

Because objects held close to the face are blurry but easier to see clearer when your arms are stretched further away from you.

The funny thing about this age related eye condition is that .. .. . There's no escape... .. . Even if you've never had a vision problem before.

Symptoms commonly start at or after the age of 40 years and gradually continue the age of 65 years.

A simple pair of reading glasses solves the problems.
This is when the words MULTIFOCALS and BIFOCALS becomes relevant.

A Visual Impairment

Refractive Error

Astigmatism describes a state where the light entering the eye is refracted into multiple focal points on the retina.

This is as a result of an irregular curvature of either the cornea or the crystalline lens inside the eye. It can occur on it's own, with myopia or with hyperopia.

A practical way to describe it would be that normally the eyeball is shaped like a soccer ball but with astigmatism is shaped like a rugby ball.

Astigmatism results in distorted blurred images in all distances near and far and a cylindrical lens needed for correction.

Hyperopia 💃🏽

A Visual Impairment: Refractive error

Hyperopia describes a state where the light entering the eye from a distanct object/source falls behind the retina resulting in a blurred image.

This could be due to one of the following reasons
1. The length of the eyeball is too short and as a result the light entering the focuses behind the retina
2. The refractive power of the eye is too week, meaning that the power needed to bend the light to position it on the retina is not enough.

Plus lenses are needed for correction. When is plus lenses are place in front of the eye it assist the eye in focusing light when it should be, resulting to a corrected clear image.

I would like to emphasize especially to parents to take their children for regular eye exams from a s little as two years old.

Starting With The Most Prevalent Of The Refractive Errors

Myopia

Myopia describes a state where the light entering the eye focuses not on the retina but in front of the retina. We are talking nearsightedness, meaning that distant objects are out of focus or blurred.

This could be due the eye's refractive power being too strong and therefore bending light to focus in front of the retina.

Or it could be due to the length of the eyeball being too long, resulting to light focused in front of the retina.

Minus lenses are needed for correction. However, there are tons of options available for management, from correcting the refractive error to slowing down its progression even to delaying the onset of myopia.
