The toast is burning.
The smoke alarm hasn’t gone off yet, but it will.

He’s screaming from the lounge, high and sharp, like the sound might crack the walls.
He’s throwing things, and the thought of the damage punches straight through my nervous system.
I’ve got one hand on the frying pan, one eye on him, and my mind is already racing through three different backup plans for how this morning could go sideways.

I don’t even need to go check, I already know I won’t know what it’s about.
It could be the wrong show. Or the wrong cup. Or the wrong division of my focus. Or nothing at all I can see.
It’s the sound of his world falling apart over something invisible to me,
but I do know it’s not nothing. Not here.

I kill the stove, leave the toast, and go to him.
His face is red, wet, furious. His fists are balled.
I keep my voice low, even though mine’s the kind that wants to yell sometimes too.

We’ve done this before.
I sit on the floor.
I wait.
I breathe.
He doesn’t want my touch yet, he just wants me to know he's angry.

So I stay close enough so he knows I’m not going anywhere.

This is the work nobody claps for.
The minutes that feel like hours.
The days that blur together.
The love that holds its ground when everything else tips over.

Later, the toast will be cold.
I’ll forget the coffee again.
I’ll carry the weight of this moment in my chest all day.
But for now, all that matters is him finding his way back.

And me?
I’ll be here.
Every time.

I know you’re not seen in these moments.
No one’s snapping photos of the screams, the flying objects, the split-second crisis plans.
But I see you, steadying the walls while the storm rips through.
And I need you to know, this is what strong really looks like.

Keep going.
