The simple cure for addiction.

In 2021, a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses came to my facility from a war torn military regime.

After 7 weeks and 35 lectures on how to address substance abuse and addictions in traumatised soldiers, they went away unmoved and dissatisfied.

I challenged their purely academic approach as being none-effective for this context.

After they had left, I felt as if I had just been exposed to The PhD Virus.

Addiction is a Social Disease: "When the radical educational critic Ivan Illich (Deschooling Society) suggested that the leading institutions of our society, educational and therapeutic, as well as economic and military, become socially or psychologically addictive, he meant that they make themselves indispensable to an insecurity which they themselves create.

By keeping people away from real experience, school makes them dependent on an artificial, formal certification of academic achievement.

Schools were originally intended to teach people the things they would need to do in life, a rationale that has long since been lost to an academic rigidity and petty power hierarchies within education systems.

The quality of the influence within everything they grew up to believe in the home, comes under doubts attacks and can easily deteriorate in the face of the influences of what they were ‘not told.’

Within world-wide communities of student bodies there is a shortage of men and women who could actually explain what an ‘independent sense of self-worth’ looks like.

They tend to believe ‘the quality of their certificate will determine who they are’, as opposed to ‘who they are’, determining the quality of their certificate.'

So guys, we are now 180 Degree Mentorship.

Here's why: Once upon a time, an ancient Greek philosopher said, “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they will never sit.”

I’m Colin Garnett, Addiction and Behaviour Analyst and Recovery Development Mentor. These have been my most significant areas of influence for over 3-decades, rooted in a spiritual, psychological, and relational depth, that for those willing to explore, offer new levels of self-awareness, personal empowerment, and stability of identity.

As much as I hate to make this claim, the Covid pandemic rejuvenated my mental health and clarified for me the direction I needed to adopt, for what I now hope will be the final chapter of my life.

This is 180 Degree Mentorship, based in England, and these are my experience based conclusions after 6-years in 27 different prisons, including two military prisons, followed by 30-years of mentoring mongrels and millionaires.

Many will find my story hard to believe but impossible to disbelieve. Many will resent my claims because of the financial outlay and sweat that it took for them to gain their PhD, in contrast to a no education working class background culminating in a 25-year therapeutic career, where I became an educator of military psychiatrists.

After 25-years of addiction counseling in some of Europe’s highest regarded clinics and as clinical director of our own private sector facility, I’m left convinced …

There’s no such thing as a ‘Rehabilitation Centre’ where ‘Addiction Treatment Programme’can take place.

These marketing terms generate false expectations in families and clients alike.

‘Rehabilitation’ implies a changed person will come home, when the reality is, ‘rehabilitation’ can only take place within the heart, mind, and life of an individual, firstly in their home-life relationships, then out in the world during the demands of responsibility.

‘Addiction Treatment’ implies healing and/or improvement, which seems to be the case when the client returns home. They’ve not used or abused substances for the treatment duration, they’ve eaten well and they’ve adopted new narratives.

However, addictions need to be embraced and accepted as the consequence of the lack of self-understanding in areas of feelings, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors which will always result in chemical dependency and relationship anarchy.
