Did you know we’re doing quite a bit of research in type 1 diabetes? 🔬
One of these studies involves trialing an Android artificial pancreas system for adults with type 1 diabetes.
You might have heard us talk about this?
We're trialing a completely automated system which requires no input from the patient. The phone's software automatically detects and administers insulin when needed to keep the blood sugar at a safe level without human intervention.
Together with our New Zealand collaborators, we’ve been testing the safety and efficacy of this open-source app, thanks to funding from Breakthrough T1D.
We're super grateful to people like Siba Diqer, who feature in this video, for taking part in this trial. We’re hoping that this app might reduce the many decisions that people like Siba have to make every day, as well as the stress and fear they live with.
Our researchers are now analysing the data in preparation to publish a paper, and we hope to share the findings with you shortly🙂.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you can bet we’ve got a few things to say about issues of the ❤️.
So we’re taking you inside one of our labs, to tell you about some cool work we’re doing to mend a failing heart.
We’ll let PhD student, Gabriella Farrugia tell you more...

Remission – it sounds like something that all people living with type 2 diabetes should be striving for. But is it possible, and is it something that everyone with type 2 diabetes should aim to achieve? The answers to these questions might surprise you.
Our experts explain. https://baker.edu.au/.../fact-sheets/t2-diabetes-remission

As bushfire activity rises globally, understanding the health implications is critical.
That’s why we're super pleased to welcome a $1 million National Health and Medical Research Council - NHMRC grant to investigate the links between long- and short-term exposure to bushfire smoke and heart disease.
Air pollution is the most important environmental driver of heart disease and with bushfire activity increasing, exposure to bushfire air pollution is also on the rise, placing more people at higher risk of serious adverse heart events.
So how are we trying to improve the health of our communities?
Well, this grant will enable Dr Quan Huynh to investigate the causal relationships between bushfire smoke exposure and early signs of heart disease and to test the potential for statins (drugs that lower cholesterol) to reduce acute and long-term adverse effects.

🔈We’re excited to share our latest research showing that a dietary supplement developed at the Institute has been found to stop the progression of heart failure in animal models.
Our researchers show that feeding mice a diet that includes this supplement, elevates energy-boosting, anti-oxidant fats that circulate in our blood, called plasmalogen lipids, which restores the integrity of damaged cells in a failing❤️.
Plasmalogens can be found naturally in foods, including mussels, scallops and octopus, and even strawberries, but you would have to consume large quantities of these food items to potentially receive the health benefits. The Baker Institute supplement, licenced to Juvenescence Ltd, contains natural components that support the production of plasmalogens in our body.

👩‍🔬Tomorrow is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women, which aims to promote full and equal access and participation in science for women and girls.
And sure, we’re going to post some profiles of some of our fabulous female scientists.👩‍🔬
But what we also want to share is the hard work going on behind the scenes to bring long-term structural change to access and representation for women in our workplace.
As part of the Athena Swan program run by Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE), we’re currently focused on understanding and addressing issues like the low proportion of women at senior levels at the Institute. We’re analysing data to understand the barriers as well as describing some of the important steps our organisation has taken to increase the representation of women at senior levels of the Institute.
Big thanks to this crew below, members of our Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, for helping to drive this work.
We’ll keep you updated on how it’s progressing.

Teleah’s high school career advisor warned her against a career in science. So what did she do? She dug in and is pursuing a career as a scientist, drawing on persistence, resilience, and adaptability as she navigates her PhD.
She is also first author on an important paper about an innovative approach to restoring damaged cells in a failing❤️. This is critical work given we need better treatments for heart failure.
On International Day of Women and Girls in Science we want to give a special shout-out to Teleah and others working to make their dreams a reality 🙂

Important reading from our friends hearts4heart.
More than half a million Australians have heart valve disease and more than a quarter of a million have undiagnosed heart valve disease (HVD).
These figures are set to rise significantly in coming decades and this is concerning because HVD can cause serious complications, including heart failure, stroke, blood clots, heart rhythm abnormalities, and even death.
It's a serious problem but the good news is that HVD is increasingly treatable.
