🩺 Your nails need protection too!
Excessive exposure to water, harsh chemicals, and extreme temperatures can weaken nails over time. If you work with cleaning agents or chemicals regularly, make sure to wear gloves to protect your nails. Moisturizing your nails and cuticles can also prevent dryness and cracking, which can lead to discomfort or even infections.

🧴 Taking simple steps to protect your nails can make a huge difference in their long-term health.

🩺 Did you know that your nails are made of keratin, the same protein that makes up your hair and skin?
Because nails are composed of a tough, fibrous protein, they require adequate nutrients for growth. Deficiencies in vitamins like biotin, zinc, and vitamin E can lead to weak, brittle nails. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals will not only support nail growth but also improve the overall health of your hair and skin.

🥗 Good nutrition is the foundation for strong, healthy nails.

🩺 Proper nail care is more important than you might think!
Regularly trimming your nails, keeping them clean and dry, and moisturizing your cuticles are all essential habits to maintain healthy nails. Avoid biting your nails, as this can lead to infections or damage to the nail bed. If you wear nail polish, be sure to give your nails some time to "breathe" between applications to prevent yellowing and weakening of the nails.

💅 A little daily care goes a long way in ensuring your nails stay strong and healthy.

Self-medication with antifungal nail lacquers is highly prevalent in the United States due to the availability of numerous over-the-counter medications and the increasing incidence of onychomycosis. Older adults are particularly affected, as slower nail growth and potential underlying conditions make them more susceptible [1]. The prevalence is also rising among children [2]. This highlights the importance of guideline-based recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of onychomycosis.

White Spots and Discoloration: What’s Behind It?

White spots on fingernails are usually harmless air bubbles that form as the nail grows and will naturally grow out on their own.

Yellow discoloration can be caused by contact with certain cleaning products or red nail polish. Some pigments in the polish are so intense that they pe*****te the nail plate. Therefore, always use a base coat! However, even clear polishes contain plasticizers and degreasers that can make nails brittle. It’s a good idea to take breaks from nail polish occasionally.

For light brown discoloration, it’s recommended to see a doctor, as this often signals the start of nail fungus, which, if left untreated, can destroy the entire nail and spread to other nails.

Dark brown to black spots that don’t grow out should definitely be examined by a dermatologist. Dark discoloration may indicate melanoma (skin cancer).

Nails Prone to Infection
Nails with any abnormalities are prone to infection. The nails and surrounding cuticle area may become infected by fungus, yeast or bacteria. If this occurs, nails may become thick or discolored, and the area may develop a bad odor, or become swollen and tender.
