Promoting well being and creating livelihoods in rural South Africa
Ubuntu: A South African word that means “I am because we are”.
I’m Jacquie Gauthier, a yoga teacher and passionate volunteer at Nourish Not For Profit. I’m spearheading the Ubuntu Yoga project; creating an African flavoured yoga and taking it to the communities. Strong candidates are being identified to become teachers, and we’re working with them to become certified yoga instructors. We currently have 3 naturally talented trainees :Zandi, Letsatsi and California. I’m very excited to be helping them take their first steps on their yoga journey. I am applying for scholarships for them with the Africa Yoga project in Kenya. It would be an incredible opportunity for them to learn in a black African Yoga culture as they work to achieve their yoga teaching qualification. If the scholarship applications are not successful, the cost would be $2000 USD per candidate. This would include the 100 hour teacher training programme as well as their accommodation and food. They are working at saving money to pay for their airfare.
The Ubuntu Yoga Pavilion will be used to give classes to the school children in the area, as well as to the staff, tourists and backpackers at Nourish Eco Village. Nourish will also be able to offer Yoga retreats, bringing in money to help make the project sustainable. The pavilion will also serve as a local training center for more yoga teachers, and for massage therapists. As teachers and massage therapists are certified, we will work with local lodges to offer the Ubuntu Yoga and traditional massage experiences to their guests. This will allow our teachers and therapists to receive some benefit from the tourist dollars flowing into our beautiful area just outside Kruger National Park.
I’m thrilled to say that thanks to generous donations the pavilion is taking shape. What we need now is a floor. Yoga mats don’t survive well in this landscape- sand and intense sun make them deteriorate quickly. Instead of mats, we hope to install a rubberized floor which will be much more durable and easy to clean. The cost of the floor is $1,600. So far we have $500 donated.
