This Mandela Day, Life Cosmos Hospital proudly took action in the spirit of Madiba’s legacy — by educating and empowering our community.

On 18 July 2025, our team hosted free health screenings and life-saving education at Highveld Mall. Our goal was simple: to reach 67 people, sharing vital knowledge that could one day save a life. From teaching CPR and recognising the signs of a stroke, to burn wound care and safe medication use — we equipped everyday people with the power to help in a crisis.

Because every skill shared is a chance to save a life.

Together, we honour Mandela’s vision of a better, healthier, and more informed community.

In an emergency unit, patients are prioritised using triage coding:

Red: Immediate attention.
Orange: Treated within 10 minutes.
Yellow: Treated within 1 hour.
Green: May wait longer for non-critical issues.

Children can have emergencies too. Prepare for a trip to the Emergency Unit by keeping a bag ready with the following items:

• A spare set of clothes and a warm clothing item or blanket.
• A favourite toy or comfort item.
• Their preferred cup or water bottle as well as a snack in case they get hungry.
• A copy of past medical records and a list of your child’s medications.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is when the pressure that blood places on blood vessels is higher than normal or necessary. Many people with high blood pressure don’t even know they have it. These could be warning signs.
Hypertension often goes unnoticed until it causes harm.
Symptoms that can indicate hypertension include but are not limited to:
▪ persistent dull headaches
▪ bloodshot eyes
▪ random nosebleeds
A diagnosis should always be made by a healthcare professional by monitoring your blood pressure regularly.
Know your numbers. Get your blood pressure checked and stay in control.

National Burns Awareness week is observed between 13 to 17 May with burns being one of the most common household injuries amongst adult and children. It is important to know the type of burn, classification of the burn and how to treat the wound.

This World Ovarian Cancer Day we’re highlighting the importance of knowing the risks and symptoms of this disease to assist with early detection.
