A Christmas message with a difference:
It is the time of the year when we are all rushing around trying to get everything done in time for the big family gathering or getting on the road to your holiday destination. It is a time that causes much frustration and stress. Time is little and so are our patience and frayed nerves. Long “to-do” and shopping lists to make sure everyone is catered for but not enough pleasant experiences to feed the soul. When we get into bed at night our minds wander to the checklists, ticking off each item in our minds but where is the checklist for that which makes your soul sing?
As I am standing in the long queue in the grocery store this morning, I look at all the serious faces. Each with a list in hand, rushing from isle to isle to make sure that they get everything they need. It is two days to Christmas, and no one here looks like they are enjoying what they are doing. If this is true, then it is very sad. There is no excitement, instead, you can feel the shoppers’ panic in their rush to get all that they need to have a good Christmas but what is the point to create a fabulous Christmas when you leave joy behind?
This time a year ago I was dying. Just before Christmas I had been diagnosed with a very rare cancer and by the time Christmas came around, I was having chemotherapy. My cells were literally dying and the only thing I wanted was to be healthy and happy.
Fast forward to this Christmas and I am in the very state that I wished for a year ago; healthy and happy. Where I am standing in the bustling grocery store, I am in a state of complete gratitude for this chance to have another Christmas with my family and loved ones. To enjoy the laughter and the joy that comes with this special time or that is supposed to come with this special time. But as I mentioned earlier, it doesn’t look like anyone is having a wonderful time, let alone being happy.
And then a word pops into my mind: laughter. That’s right, no one is laughing. Everyone is so serious. The ladies at the tills are greeting everyone in a professional, friendly manner but only a few of the many shoppers respond in a similar manner. Most are so serious, too serious.
There is one thing that resets a mood and that is laughter. We NEED to make time to laugh, every day!
I never understood why I laughed when I became nervous and standing here in the busy store I realized that I laughed at scary or stressful times because it resets the energy. It breaks the ice, so to speak. It makes room for different energy to flow into a room or situation. It changes the vibration of the situation I find myself in and it elevates me.
There is another type of laughter that feeds the soul and heals the physical body and that is laughing deeply with others. We have all heard that laughter is medicine and good, heartfelt laughter is exactly that. It is medicine for your cells, it is medicine for your mind and it is medicine for your relationships. Few things feel better than laughing with family and friends.
Laughter is like life’s bubbles, beautiful.
So my friends, if I have one message for you this Christmas then it is to make time to laugh. Every day. On your own or with others. Laugh so deeply that you can feel the change in your body and around you. And do it often. Laughter can change our world and when you add love to this then it is the silver bullet for any situation.
