30 March is World Bipolar Day.
Bipolar disorder is often misunderstood, and many people living with the condition face stigma and judgement in addition to their mental health challenges.
Bipolar disorder affects mood, energy levels, and the ability to carry out everyday activities. People may experience periods of depression as well as periods of elevated mood, which can affect sleep, energy, and behaviour.
Like many mental health conditions, bipolar disorder is complex and unique for every person. With appropriate support, treatment, and understanding from family and community, people living with bipolar disorder can lead meaningful and fulfilling lives.
Raising awareness helps reduce stigma and encourages compassion and understanding. 💚

💡 Today, 30 March 2026, marks World Bipolar Awareness Day.

"Despite the grief, I have had to accept that parts of my life will always be different from most people’s—past, present, and future. I still feel like the cards I’ve been dealt are unfair, and now and again, I still allow myself to sulk about it. But, as I have gotten older and lived more of my life stably, I have come to recognise that my life is not the only one with limits and hardships."

This powerful reflection comes from Michela Thorns, who shares her lived experience with Bipolar II Disorder in a personal essay published by the South African Federation for Mental Health.

Her story is an important reminder that mental health challenges are often invisible—and that awareness, empathy, and supportive environments are essential in our workplaces and communities.

We are thankful to Michela for sharing her story so boldly and honestly.

Life can feel overwhelming at times, and it’s easy to forget how much strength it takes just to keep going.

If today feels difficult, remember that progress doesn’t always look big or dramatic. Sometimes progress simply means showing up for another day. 💚

One of the biggest barriers to mental health care is stigma.

Many people avoid seeking help because they fear being judged, misunderstood, or labelled.

When we talk openly about mental health, we help create safer spaces where people feel supported rather than ashamed. 💚

International Day of Happiness reminds us that happiness does not always look like big smiles or constant positivity. 💚

For many people, happiness can be found in small moments — a conversation with a friend, a quiet cup of tea, a moment of rest, or feeling understood.

Mental health support helps people create space for these moments.

Today, we celebrate the small things that bring light into our lives.

Inclusion is not just about awareness days. 💚

It is about everyday choices — how we speak, how we listen, and whether we make space for people with different needs and abilities.

True inclusion starts with dignity and respect.

Many people struggling with mental health challenges believe they are a burden to others.
This belief can be deeply painful and isolating.

Needing help does not make you weak or difficult — it makes you human. 💚

Everyone deserves care, dignity, and support, especially during hard times.

There is a harmful belief that talking about mental health is “attention-seeking.”

In reality, speaking up often takes courage. It is a sign of trust and vulnerability, not manipulation.

When we dismiss someone’s feelings, we teach them to suffer in silence. When we listen, we create safety.
