Abscesses: When to Seek Medical Care
An abscess occurs when the body walls off a collection of pus and bacteria under the skin or in other areas of the body. Abscesses can develop almost anywhere and are usually painful.
Common symptoms of an abscess include:
• A sore, red, and swollen area
• Warmth around the affected area
• Swollen glands (lymph nodes)
• Fever
• Feeling generally unwell
Important: Do not squeeze an abscess, as this can cause the infection to spread.
When should you see a doctor?
Seek medical attention if:
• You develop a fever or chills
• The area around the abscess becomes warm
• Redness and swelling worsen
Early treatment can prevent complications and promote faster healing.
