Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in Zambia, especially during the rainy season when mosquitoes are most active.
How Do You Get Malaria?
Malaria is spread through the bites of female Anopheles mosquitoes which carry the malaria parasite. When an infected mosquito bites, the parasite enters your bloodstream and can cause serious health problems if not treated early.

Who Is Most at Risk?

- Those with weakened immune systems
5 Simple Ways to Prevent Malaria:
1. Sleep Under an Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Net: This is one of the most effective ways to prevent mosquito bites at night.
2. Use Mosquito Repellent: Apply repellent to exposed skin, especially in the evening when mosquitoes are most active.
3. Wear Protective Clothing: Long sleeves and pants help reduce mosquito bites when you’re outdoors.
4. Clear Stagnant Water: Mosquitoes breed in still water. Ensure your surroundings are free of puddles and open containers where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
5. Take Preventive Medication: If you live in or are traveling to a malaria-endemic area, consult a doctor about preventive antimalarial drugs.
Why Seek Early Treatment?
Early treatment can prevent complications like severe anemia, organ failure, and even death. If you experience any symptoms of malaria, it’s important to get medical help right away.
