DIABETES MELLITUS
A group of diseases characterised by high blood sugar concentrations resulting from defects of insulin secretion , insulin action or both.
What is insulin though?
A hormone produced in the pancreas by beta cells that is necessary for the use or storage of body fuels (carbohydrates, proteins and fats ).
Today lets concentrate on Type 1 diabetes Mellitus
What is it?
It refers to forms the disease that have no known cause . The primary defect is pancreatic beta cell destruction usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency resulting in increased blood sugar, excessive urination, excessive thirst, excessive hunger , weight loss , dehydration and electrolyte disturbance
MEDICATIONS
your doctor may prescribe insulin injections or insulin infusion pumps to account for the insulin not produced in the body .
NUTRITION GOAL FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES
maintain blood glucose concentration in a physiologically Normal range as possible by coordinating diet and physical activity patterns and insulin therapy
Minimise episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
Manage weight appropriately by providing adequate calories
Improve overall health through healthful food choices
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY IN TYPE 1 DIABETES
*Adhere to the negotiated meal plan
*Adjust food and /or insulin in response to hyperglycemia
*Adjusting insulin dose for meal size and content
*Appropriately treating low blood sugar(hypoglycemia)
*There is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes but choosing healthier foods may help balance blood sugar levels. These foods may include : carbohydrates such a wholegrains , starchy foods , fruits and vegetables , pulses , unsweetened yogurt and milk , nuts and seeds.
Tea and coffee are still ok to include too .
Physical activity is also another important factor to help balance weight which helps balance blood sugar levels .
