We have all heard the saying that "innocent till proven guilty " but justice is not always as swift and timely as we would want it. This leaves Remandees in a tough spot as some spend more time in correctional facilities before their case can be heard in the courts of law. These are still people with human rights and entitlements as any other citizen of the country. Did you know that some of these people who find themselves incercerated for one reason or the other are breadwinners? As you can summize this leaves their children in awkward and sometimes destitute situations. We are here as Nizuhile Foundation to empower these people in correctional facilities with skills and a way to help them provide some form of income to their circumstantial children and families. We are today launching our project at the Lusaka Central prison.Join us by sharing your experiences and encounters with prisoners and Remandess.

PLEASE LET'S NOT FORGET THESE MEASURES SUGGESTED

Prisons should have a more efficient medical system. They should compulsorily conduct a check-up of detainees while they are brought to jail and then regularly conduct a check-up. Their medical records should be maintained punctually.
There is an urgent need to upgrade sanitary, hygiene and drinking water amenities in prisons across Zambia
Detention centres should become more women-friendly, with similar facilities being bestowed on the aged and mentally ill prisoners
There should be greater focus on mentally ill detainees. They should be segregated from regular prisoners, as their hygiene needs are different.
Regular exercise and yoga sessions should be conducted IN conjunction with NGOs.
There should be regular cleaning of the sewage system-minus human help for cleaning septic tanks wherein mechanical means should be encouraged.

Zambia has a total of 87 prison facilities. Of these 54 are regular maximum or medium-security prisons, and 33 are open air low-security or ‘farm’prisons for pre-release inmates. Zambian Prisons are severely overcrowded, the inmate occupancy rate (convicted prisoners and remandees) between 2014 and 2016 hovered around270% of the official holding capacity of 6100 inmates.Previous and current work has highlighted lack of ad-equate cleaning supplies within prisons as direct and indirect contributors to the poor health status of both male and female inmates. Of Zambia’s 87 correctional facilities, 17 have an asso-ciated health service. Eight of those 17 facilities have a health clinic within the prison walls established exclusively for inmate and officer use and staffed by health professionals employed ZCS. The remaining nine facilities have a Ministry of Health (MOH)-run primary health centre situated outside the prison but within walking distance. A total of 60 correctional facilities are dependent on a combination of prisoner-transfers to the closest MOH-run health facility or, occasionally, internal visits by MOH doctors. In all prisons, a combination of lack of human resources for health, weak integration of health and hygiene protocols and almost no oversight of prison-based health, contribute to sub-standard service access and quality. The pro-found isolation and lack of provision for basic needs make prison inmates in Zambia a highly vulnerable population.

NIZUHILE wants to help tackle some of the health challenges that arise from not maintaining a clean environment.
