A WAKE-UP CALL: UNDERSTANDING THE ABUSE OF TRIHEXYPHENIDYL (BENZHEXOL) AMONG YOUNG KIDS
Yesterday, a concerned parent walked into the pharmacy with a heartbreaking story. Her child had been drugged by friends using Trihexyphenidyl, commonly known as Benzhexol or artane. She was distraught and confused, asking, “Why would anyone give my child this drug?”
As a pharmacist and a member of the community, it’s crucial to shed light on this alarming trend of abuse among young people, explain what this drug is, why it’s dangerous, and how we can protect our children.
What is Trihexyphenidyl (Benzhexol)?
Trihexyphenidyl is a prescription medication primarily used to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or movement disorders caused by certain psychiatric drugs. It works by balancing chemicals in the brain, reducing tremors, stiffness, and rigidity.
Why is it Being Abused?
Some young people misuse this drug for its hallucinogenic effects, which can include:
Intense euphoria or a "high"
Distorted perception of reality
Feelings of invincibility or detachment
Unfortunately, they often view it as harmless or "just another way to have fun," but the reality is far from it.
The Dangers of Trihexyphenidyl Abuse
When used without medical supervision or in high doses, Trihexyphenidyl is extremely harmful. Here's why:
1️⃣ Severe Side Effects:
Confusion
Blurred vision
Increased heart rate
Dizziness or fainting
Hallucinations and delusions
2️⃣ Overdose Risks:
Abuse can lead to life-threatening conditions such as seizures, psychosis, or even coma.
3️⃣ Addiction Potential:
Continued misuse can lead to dependence, where the body craves higher doses, increasing the risk of overdose.
4️⃣ Long-Term Brain Damage:
Prolonged abuse affects memory, decision-making, and mental health, causing irreversible harm.
Why Kids Are Vulnerable
Peer Pressure: Many young people fall into this trap due to social influence and the desire to fit in.
Lack of Awareness: They often don’t understand the dangers of misusing prescription drugs.
Accessibility: Trihexyphenidyl is sometimes obtained from poorly secured medicine cabinets, friends, or illegal dealers.
What Can Parents and Guardians Do?
1️⃣ Educate Your Kids:
Talk openly about the dangers of drug abuse, including prescription medications like Trihexyphenidyl.
Use real-life examples to emphasize the consequences.
2️⃣ Monitor Medication Storage:
Keep prescription drugs in a secure location, out of reach of children and visitors.
Dispose of unused or expired medications responsibly.
3️⃣ Be Vigilant:
Look out for changes in behavior, such as mood swings, secretive actions, or unusual items (e.g., pills, empty blister packs).
4️⃣ Engage in Their Lives:
Build trust so they feel comfortable discussing peer pressure and challenges they face.
A Message to Young People
Trihexyphenidyl is not a toy. Abusing it can cost you your health, your future, and even your life. True strength is saying "no" to dangerous choices and focusing on building a bright future.
Community Responsibility
As a community, we must work together to raise awareness and prevent abuse. Educators, parents, healthcare providers, and leaders all play a role in protecting our youth.
Let’s start conversations, educate, and act decisively to end this dangerous trend.
