Sub-Saharan Africa continues to bear the highest burden of maternal mortality, with over 533 deaths per 100,000 live births. In Zambia, where 60% of antenatal care is deemed poor quality and many women do not receive a single ultrasound scan, early detection of pregnancy-related risks remains a critical gap.
Through Dawa Healthโs initiative, AI-powered tools like BabyChecker are changing that narrative. By enabling non-specialist healthcare workers to perform ultrasound scans in remote areas, BabyChecker helps identify conditions like placenta previa and anemia early-conditions that might otherwise go undetected until delivery.
To date, this initiative has supported over 7,000 women, with ambitions to reach 30,000 by the end of 2025. As Tafadzwa Kalisto Munzwa, Executive Director of Dawa Health, explains, โA simple scan can mean the difference between life and death for a mother and her child.โ
