💢 Bursitis is a painful condition that affects the small, fluid - filled sacs - called bursae - that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near your joints. Bursitis occurs when bursae become inflamed.
The most common locations for bursitis are in the shoulder, elbow and lip. But you can also have bursitis by your knee, heels and the base of your big toe. Bursitis often occurs near joints that perform frequent repetitive motion.
Symptoms
1- Feel achy or stiff
2- Hurt more when you move it or Press on it
3- Look swollen and red
Cause
The most common cause of bursitis are repetitive motions or positions that irritate the bursae around a joint.
Examples:
1- Throwing a baseball or lifting something over your head repeatedly
2- leaning on your elbow for long periods
3- Extensive kneeling for tasks
4- Prolonged sitting, particularly on hard surfaces
5- Injury or trauma to the affected area such as Rheumatoid arthritis, Gout and Infection.
Risk factors
1- Age - older age
2- Occupations or hobbies (repetitive motion or pressure on particular bursae
Diagnosis
1- Physical examination
2- Imaging tests (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound)
3- Lab tests
Treatment
1-Medication ( antibiotic)
2- Therapy ( physical therapy or exercises)
3- Injections ( corticosteroids)
4- Assistive device
5- Surgery ( rarely)
