The Zambia Universities and Colleges Model United Nations (ZUCMUN) proudly celebrates the re-election of Roberta Metsola as the President of the European Parliament. In a world where effective leadership is paramount, your continued dedication to Europe resonates profoundly.

We as ZUCMUN strongly advocate for the full implementation of Zambia's free education policy, which promises inclusive and quality education for all children. It is with great concern, however, that we address recent reports of schools reducing subjects taught due to over enrollment. This report by BBC News Africa makes sad reading.

Education is the cornerstone of national development, and every child deserves access to a comprehensive curriculum as outlined by the prescribed syllabus. This not only ensures their academic growth but also prepares them to contribute meaningfully to Zambia's future.

The Government's commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure through initiatives like the Constituency Development Fund, aimed at constructing additional classroom blocks and distributing desks, underscores its dedication to supporting our educators and students alike.

While we acknowledge the challenges posed by large class sizes, we must vehemently oppose any measures that compromise the quality of education provided. It is imperative that teachers uphold their duty to the nation by teaching in accordance with the established curriculum. This approach not only fosters patriotism but also equips our children with the knowledge and skills necessary for their future success.

We urge all educators to embrace their role as custodians of Zambia's educational integrity and prioritize the holistic development of every student. Together, let us ensure that every child receives the education they deserve.

European Union in Zambia FUNDING ON NUTRITION

The European Union’s decision to mobilize EUR 4.5 million (approximately K125 million) to bolster the emergency response to the drought situation in Zambia is a significant and commendable action. This funding, directed through the Scaling Up Nutrition II (SUN 2) programme, represents a critical lifeline for nearly 90,000 women and children in the most drought-affected districts.

For young children, this increased funding creates invaluable opportunities. By providing essential food assistance—such as maize meal, beans, cooking oil, and high-energy protein supplements—alongside nutrient supplements for babies under two years old and treatment for severe wasting, the EU ensures that these children receive the nutrition necessary for healthy growth and development. This support helps prevent severe nutrient deficiencies that can have long-lasting effects on children’s physical and cognitive development.

Moreover, the inclusion of cash transfers as part of this aid package empowers families to meet their immediate nutritional needs and promotes economic stability in these hard-hit communities. The comprehensive nature of this aid—addressing both immediate food insecurity and long-term nutritional health—demonstrates a holistic approach to humanitarian assistance.

The EU’s commitment to supporting Zambia in building resilience against the impacts of climate change and El Niño is crucial. By investing in the health and well-being of the most vulnerable, we are investing in a stronger, more resilient future for Zambia. The support provided today will have lasting positive impacts, helping to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change on our youngest and most vulnerable citizens.

As we face an accelerating climate crisis, actions like these from the EU exemplify the international solidarity and proactive measures needed to ensure no one is left behind. ZUCMUN applauds this initiative and calls for continued and increased global support to address the urgent needs arising from climate-related challenges.

YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE ACROSS AFRICA

As the Zambian Universities and Colleges Model United Nations, we applaud the African Development Bank Group for its commitment to empowering youth through initiatives like the Benin Community Forest Management Support Project. This project exemplifies the transformative impact of investing in young people within the agriculture sector, encouraging them to embrace entrepreneurship opportunities locally rather than seeking uncertain futures abroad.

We firmly believe that agriculture presents a pivotal avenue for youth empowerment and economic growth across Africa. By supporting initiatives that equip young people like Ernest Akey with the resources and skills needed to succeed in sectors such as fish farming, we not only enhance their livelihoods but also contribute to sustainable development goals.

Ernest Akey's decision to stay and develop his fish farming business reflects the positive outcomes of targeted support. His story underscores the potential for agriculture to provide meaningful employment and income opportunities for youth, thereby stemming migration trends and promoting local economic resilience.

As the Zambian Universities and Colleges Model United Nations, we remain committed to advocating for policies and programs that foster youth entrepreneurship and capacity building, particularly within the agricultural sector. We commend the African Development Bank Group's focus on youth empowerment and encourage continued investment in initiatives that empower young Africans to thrive and contribute to their communities.
