What is the Difference Between Coding and Programming?

by Hillary Nyakundi

It took me a long time to understand what the terms programming and coding really meant, and what each field entailed. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt confused by those two terms when I was new to tech.

For a while I thought that they were the same thing, and it took me some time to understand that there are differences between the two "worlds".

In this article, I'll explain the basic differences between coding and programming and how they work collaboratively to develop apps and sites.

So let’s explore these terms and how professionals use them by first understanding what they mean.

What is Coding?
Coding is basically the act of translating code from human language to a machine-based language.
In order to become a coder, you need to be able to write code in different programming languages such as Python, Java, C and so on. With this knowledge you will be able to provide instructions and information to the computer to make it execute the programs you or your team creates.
Coding involves writing code for creating a software program. Any sort of application, website, or game is a program.

What is programming?
Programming is the process of developing an executable software program that is implemented without any errors. It is the programmer’s job to analyze a problem in the code and provide solutions.

In order to come up with an application you will need to carry out a few steps including:

■planning the application
■designing it
■testing its features
■deploying it
■maintaining it after it's finished

So it's only fair to say that programming not only deals with coding but also implementing algorithms and much more.

Let's try and explain it in a simpler way so we can get a better understanding.

For example, you can program your watch to wake you up at 8 AM. Also, you can program the AC to come on at the temperature that you have chosen. These devices have code on the backend that works based on a set of instructions given by the user.

The Differences Between Coding and Programming

Basic Difference
Coding is a part of programming that deals with writing code that a machine can translate. Programming is the process of creating a program that follows certain standards and performs a certain task.

Tools
Coding doesn’t require as many software tools since its just an act of code translation to machine readable form. Just a simple text editor like wordpad or notepad will suffice. As a coder you need to know the details of the syntax of your programming language.
Programming requires that you perform document reviews and analysis along with coding that requires extra tools. These tools include code analysis tools, code generators, databases, testing frameworks, compilers, GUI designers, assemblers, debuggers, and modeling algorithms. A programmer needs lots of experince in order to obtain these skills. They should also be able to understand and create complex data structures.

Expertise
Coders should have basic knowledge of programming languages and their syntax and keywords.
Programmers should have experience creating algorithms, modeling problems, processing data, and managing projects – these are just some of the practical skills needed. Programmers also apply their imagination and analytical skills to help them solve specific problems.

Outcome
While coding, your expected outcome is a simple solution or a small part of a project. The code acts as a set of instructions given to the computer.
On the other hand, programming yields whole application, software products, or a website that is ready to use.

How Coding and Programming Work Together
By now you probably have an understanding of the differences between the two terms. Now, how do coding and programming work together to accomplish various tasks?

Why don't we explain this using an example so as to get a better understanding. Imagine we are creating an app to monitor something like our daily routine for us. How will these two fields work together?

▪︎First the programmer will have to:
▪︎plan the structure of the app,
▪︎write down features of the app
▪︎design the app
▪︎and think of any other features that should be included in the app.

After the programmer is done with these first steps, they hand it over to the coder.

Now the coder will come in and transform those ideas into code that the computer can understand. After this magical process is done, the completed code is given bact to the programmer.

Now the programmer will go through the code do some polishing by debugging, checking for errors, and doing tests before publishing the final product.
Now you can see how these two fields have come together to work on an idea and produce somthing that is usable to the public.

Conclusion
If you're interested in logic, then you might try focusing on programming, while if you're better at memorizing and understanding things you can focus on coding.

It all depends on which area you would like to explore, since computer science is a wide field and it's still evolving not stopping anytime soon. So enjoy your journey as you find your path.

It took me a while to understand whom I am – How long will it take you? Let me know if you have figured out your path.

Duty Free incentives in Zambia for the Agricultural sector

Did you know that not all products attract customs duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) at importation? The government through the Zambia Revenue Authority allows you to import various goods duty free while others you only pay VAT at 16%.

The government deliberately puts in place these incentives to grow various sectors of the economy by deliberately introducing zero or lower tax rates on these sectors. Among the sectors with huge list of items that are duty free are the agricultural sector and manufacturing sector.

The list is so long but we shall try and list few items to just have an idea of what is provided for in the various laws in terms of tax rebates and incentives.

Let us start with items that are both duty free and zero rated meaning no taxes are paid at importation.

These include agricultural fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, bovine semen and animal embryos, live roses but they require a permit from the Ministry of agriculture before importation. Other goods are raw materials for manufacturing of various feeds, machinery for milling, machinery for making cereals etc

Another set of goods will be duty free but will attract VAT only at 16%. These goods will include among them, crude palm and Soya -bean oil for final processing in Zambia which also requires a permit from ministry of agriculture, Solar panels and solar equipment, generator sets, agricultural tractors, ploughs, pumps for liquids and cultivation machinery.

Interestingly truck horses, special purpose motor vehicles (for example breakdown lorries, crane lorries, fire fighting vehicles, concrete-mixer lorries, spraying lorries etc) bakery equipment, refrigerating or freezing equipment for cold rooms, poultry incubators, dairy machinery, industrial machinery for manufacturing of drinks, cutting machinery, dry cleaning machinery, printing machinery (letter press), machinery for making foot ware, telephone sets and cell phones, video recording equipment, aero planes, water floating tankers and refrigerated vessels are also duty free and they only pay VAT.

These are all great opportunities that give entrepreneurs a boost to start or improve their businesses.

Remember that the list becomes longer with goods imported from within the Regional Economic Communities to which Zambia is party such as SADC and COMESA are exempt from paying customs duty if such goods meet the origin criteria for the Regional Economic Communities.

This simply means that goods manufactured and originating from countries that a member states of SADC or COMESA are likely to enjoy the duty-free status provide they produce an authentic certificate of origin and meet the requirements as provided by the law.

The journey to finding an artist.
I was so shocked and embarrassed that l do not have sculptors on the list of my contacts and network of associations.
So l asked around to no avail. I decided to advertise on my Facebook timeline and there still was no sculptor on the list of my 4995+ FB friends.
Recommendations started coming on my Facebook thread and most were recommending and tagging just one same person whom l shall call artist A. So l checked his profile, l liked his works and l sent him a friend request. I was so sure that l have found my guy. I went to his inbox and asked for his number. He didn't give me his number and preffered to duscuss from the FB inbox. I asked him how much he would charge for one animal as l needed four. He came up with a huge figure that only government or a big NGO can pay inclusive of cuts for all parties. The figure just for one animal was too huge for an average businessman. So l kicked in my negotiating skills by saying "how much would you charge for labour if l bought all the materials?"
The person did not reply to my message but wrnt to his Facebook timeline and posted on his wall saying, "after quoting a customer, he is asking for my labour costs for art less the material costs."
I got offended when l saw that post which received a lot of comments some mocking and saying stay away from such customers. I love picking positives from situations and these are some of the things l picked from comments on that thread.

1) Art is not affordable to everybody therefore art is not meant for everybody.
2) An artist can pick materials from a rubbish dump and make a fine piece of art out of them.
3) Time and effort is what determines the value of an artwork.
4) The real value of a piece of art is appreciated by those that are ready to pay for the value that the artist places on the piece of art.

I became excited as comments were flooding that thread because most comments were coming from his fellow artists and l started checking their profiles and got talking to them while l was waiting for artist A to get back to my inbox.
There was also artist B who never commented on that thread but a lot of comments were referring to him and most kept on tagging him but he never commented.
So l decided to also look up artist B who was contantly tagged in comments on that thread. He was so organised he also has a page just for his art with address details and contact details.
I gave him a call and asked how much he would charge for one big elephant, a rhino and two baby elephants. He quoted me at 40% lower than artist A. What artist A was asking for on one animal, artist B was asking for all animals at a lower cost. Having started negotiations on a high note with artist A, l just said yes to artist B's first offer because it was way to low compared to artist A's asking.
Artistist A decided to come back to my inbox with a 50% subtraction from his initial offer which was still slightly higher than what artist B had offered. It was too late the deal was already closed with artist B while artist A was pasting the inbox negotiations onto his FB wall.
Logistics were put in place, artist B came over, he was given executive hospitality and he did what he does best. Completed and left our client and us smiling.
The branding and sales process should be completed by a smiling customer and this sculptor did just that. All parties including the elephants remained smiling in this deal.
Tourists even started pitching up for pictures even though the acutual landscaping is incomplete.
Let art flood our surroundings.
