Helping Children Smile Again
Cleft lip and palate surgery is not just about physical transformation; it's about restoring confidence and self actualization. If not treated with surgical intervention it affects a child’s ability to eat, speak, and breath properly.
Cleft conditions can lead to self-esteem issues and social challenges. Surgery can significantly improve a child's appearance, reducing the potential for bullying or stigmatization, and fostering a positive self-image.
We are grateful to God for the beautiful gift of resorting not only smiles, but also bring joy and hope for brighter futures for children with cleft lip and palate.

For years, Christine struggled with a growing tumor on her tongue, making it difficult to eat, talk, and even close her mouth. Her mother, Susan, tirelessly sought help, but no one addressed the root cause—until they found CURE Zambia through a mobile clinic.
In partnership with Christian Blind Mission CBM UK Christine received life-changing ENT surgery at Beit CURE Children's Hospital. She is now doing great—eating, talking, and smiling with ease! Inspired by her journey, Christine dreams of becoming a surgeon one day so she can help people in need of care.

Our Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) department embraces endoscopic surgery methods this is simply minimal invasive or small sized incisions that allows a surgeon to examine and treat ENT conditions using an endoscope a thin flexible tube with a camera and a light source attached to it.
The beauty of this using this kind of surgery is that there is reduced recovery time for a patient due to the smaller or minimal incisions, lowers risks of infections, and real time imaging.

Cletus dropped out of school because he could not bear the shame of his friends laughing at him every time he went to school. He has been through so much physical and emotional pain but we thank God he made it through our gates.
Cletus has had a series of life changing surgeries that CURE Zambia conducted on him to correct his burn contracture. When he came back for a follow up visit, he was thrilled to update us that he is back in school and from his smile you can tell that his confidence is unmatched compared to the last time we saw him.
We are excited for what the future has in store for this intelligent young man.
Join us in thanking God for Cletus’s healing and we thank our partners who partnered with us in making his healing possible!

Did you know? When a child is born with a cleft palate/lip, it can affect more than just their smile and speech. It also impacts their ears and hearing!
When these children eat, mucus can make its way into their ear canals, leading to buildup over time. This can interfere with their ability to hear clearly, causing potential issues in speech and development.
During cleft surgery, our Plastic Surgeon Dr Meredith and Ear, Nose and Throat ENT) surgeon Dr Haben work closely to address this. As they repair the cleft, they also ensure the mucus is carefully cleared from the ears. This essential step helps prevent future hearing issues, giving children not only a better smile but a clearer world to hear and explore.
We’re so grateful for the comprehensive care that helps transform lives, one surgery at a time!

“He’s finally eligible for solid food now, but when I tried giving him some, it came out through his nose,” Lillian said, her voice cracking as tears streamed down her cheeks. “I feel so sorry for him. So I give him milk. That’s all I can do right now.”

Seven-month-old Victor was born with a bilateral cleft lip; both sides of his lip opened up into his nose, making it extremely difficult to eat or drink without food spilling out.

For his mother, this was heartbreaking. She couldn’t understand why her baby looked the way he did. “Why does my child look like this?” she asked herself. Strangers would whisper, stare, and even blame her for his condition. “They didn’t know how much it hurt me,” she shared. “It was eating me up inside every time I heard their comments.”

But today, thanks to our partner , Victor has a new smile and a renewed hope-filled future. Join us in thanking God for Victor’s healing. 🙏

This is Sibajene, a shy but bubbly young lady being treated at Beit-CURE Children’s Hospital of Zambia. “I dream of becoming a nurse when I grow up,” Sibajene told us.
She was born with a cleft lip, and her life has not been easy. Sibajene’s name, in her language, means "I did not meet my father," which is indeed what happened to her because her father passed away while her mother was pregnant with her. A few years later, she lost her mother. But luckily, her older sister stepped up and became her guardian.
Sibajene's whole life, her lip has isolated her from other kids and set her apart as someone to make fun of rather than be friends with.
When Zambia’s president was scheduled to pass through her area, she and the community gathered on the side of the road to watch, and surprisingly, one of the cars in the fast-sweeping presidential motorcade pulled over right in front of her. The car’s driver knew about CURE Zambia, and when he saw Sibajene, he knew he had information that could change her life! He quickly told her about CURE Zambia’s work and even helped arrange for her to visit the hospital!
We thank God for rewriting Sibajene’s story. After life-changing surgery to correct her cleft lip, her joy and confidence were restored, and we are excited for her future.
We want to say a special thank you to our partner Train for making Sibajene’s surgery possible.

Going to the theatre for surgery can be scary for a child, with unfamiliar faces, big machines, and a world of uncertainty. That’s why at Beit CURE Children's Hospital, we are intentional about taking extra time to create a calm, caring, and child-friendly environment before every surgical procedure.
From explaining things in a way they understand, to offering hugs, smiles, prayers, and even their favourite toys, every small step helps them feel braver.
When a child feels safe, supported, and loved… healing starts even before the surgery begins.

Our Story

In 2004, CURE signed an agreement with the Zambian Ministry of Health to operate a pediatric teaching hospital specializing in the treatment and care of children living with physical disabilities. The Beit Trust, a UK-based charity, provided $1.5 million to support construction of the hospital as a centennial gift to the people of Zambia. The Zambian government donated a 60-acre plot of land for the hospital site. CURE Zambia opened in 2006.

CURE Zambia is one of the few hospitals in Zambia able to adequately address the surgical needs of children with disabilities in the country. The hospital campus is comprised of six buildings, housing 45 patient beds in the children’s ward and 16 beds in the private patients ward. The hospital also houses a chapel and spiritual center, three operating theaters, an outpatient clinic, an administrative building and a general services building. Services at the hospital are focused on pediatric orthopedics and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Through the work done at our hospital and at various mobile clinics, CURE Zambia is addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those who need help most.
