BY: CHANDA MWANGO

Education Minister Douglas Syakalima has announced that Levy Mwanawasa Medical University has been added to the national student loan scheme, becoming the 10th public institution to benefit from the initiative.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Syakalima described the move as a milestone in governmentโ€™s mission to expand access to higher education for all Zambians.

He explained that beginning with the 2026 academic year, students at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University will be eligible for comprehensive financial support, which includes tuition fees, accommodation, book and research allowances, and a living allowance.

The package also comes with insurance coverage against death, permanent disability and mental incapacitation, reflecting governmentโ€™s commitment to prioritising medical education as a pillar of national development.

Mr. Syakalima further said the scheme will offer applicants flexible options of 100 percent, 75 percent or 25 percent support, depending on their financial needs and circumstances.

Currently, more than 44,000 students are accessing loans across nine universities, including the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University, Kwame Nkrumah University, Mulungushi University and Chalimbana University.

Chongwe -Tuesday 9th September,2025.

Chongwe Member of Parliament, Hon. Sylvia T. Masebo, has commended Chongwe Municipal Council for its collaborative approach in rehabilitating feeder roads, describing the initiative as a timely and commendable effort to improve rural infrastructure ahead of the rainy season.

โ€œIโ€™m happy to see this level of collaboration and commitment from our Local Authority, farmers, and the mining community,โ€ Hon. Masebo said. โ€œImproved feeder roads are vital for agricultural productivity, access to markets, and overall economic development in our district. This is a clear example of what we can achieve when we work together.โ€

Chongwe Town Clerk, Mr. Damson Mukwato, disclosed that the partnership aims to supplement government efforts by mobilizing local resources to speed up road works before the onset of the rains.

โ€œWe want to leverage the support of the community and make substantial progress while weather conditions are still favorable,โ€ Mr. Mukwato stated. โ€œThis collaboration is helping us accelerate the work and ensure that key rural roads remain accessible.โ€

The road rehabilitation project, which is already underway, involves a partnership between Chongwe Municipal Council, local farmers, and mining companies who are providing machinery and other logistical support.

Hon. Masebo and Mr. Mukwato yesterday toured some of the ongoing works on the feeder roads, accompanied by various stakeholders. The project is expected to significantly enhance road connectivity in rural Chongwe, facilitating transportation and access to essential services for local communities.
