‎Today we are going to discuss PrEP(PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS)

‎What is PrEP?

‎Pre-exposure prophylaxis or prep is a daily course of anti retroviral drugs(ARVs) taken by HIV negative people to protect themselves from HIV infection.

‎Studies /trials of oral PrEP have shown that, when taken consistently and correctly,PrEP is highly effective and reduces the chances of HIV infection. When someone has been exposed to HIV e.g through sex,the medicine can work to keep the virus from establishing a permanent infection. The effectiveness of PrEP is intricately linked to adherence.

‎Who should take PrEP
‎Eligibility Criteria

‎1.All HIV negative individuals with a perceived risk of HIV acquisition willing to be adherent.

‎2.No suspicion of acute HIV infection

‎3.Able to attend regular 3 months reviews and HIV testing.

‎4.Able to apply other prevention methods such as barriers(condoms) to prevent the transmission of other STIs.

‎5.Willing to stop taking PrEP when no longer eligible.

‎Where can one access PrEP services?

‎PrEP services are offered for free in all government of the republic of Zambia health facilities this includes rural health posts and centers.

‎Visit the nearest health facility for your PrEP services.
‎You can protect yourself and others from the acquisition of HIV.

‎Is PrEP safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

‎PrEP is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding for HIV-negative women who are receiving PrEP and remain at risk of HIV acquisition.
‎The benefits of preventing HIV acquisition in the mother, and the accompanying reduced risk of mother -to -child transmission outweigh any potential risks of PrEP.including any risks of foetal and infant exposure to drugs in PrEP regimens.

‎Note: Together we can stop 🛑 HIV new infections.
‎Lets fight and conquer!!!!
