BREASTFEEDING WEEK CAMPAIGN LAUNCH.
The Ministry of Health last week officially launched the Breastfeeding Week, under the Theme, " Prioritize Breastfeeding: create sustainable Support Systems".
Today, The Mongu District Health Office launched the Breastfeeding Week campaign at Lewanika General Hospital.
This year's campaign highlights the importance of creating supportive environments for breastfeeding, especially in the work place, and the communities at large.
Speaking at the launch this morning, The District Commissioner- Mongu, Mr Morgan Akabeswa said, " The theme- prioritize Breastfeeding: create sustainable Support, resonates with the National Health Agenda and the commitment to the wellbeing of every Zambian Child and Mother, as outlined in the 2022 to 2026 Strategic Plan, which focuses on improving the overall status of the population and achieving universal Health coverage.
He further said that, " The New Dawn Government under the stewardship of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr Hakainde Hichilema, is committed to implementing Warm Chain Breastfeeding, a comprehensive approach which places the Mother and Baby's health at the core."
This Approach encompasses a network of inter- connected support systems that span from pregnancy through to a child's second Birthday .
Meanwhile, the District Health Director, Dr S. Lioma said that, " Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure the wellbeing of mothers and babies as it provides essential nutrients, boosts baby's immune system, and fosters a strong bond between mother and child.
However, there are many challenges that Breastfeeding mothers face such as; lack of support, societal pressure,and inadequate Health Care Services.
He called upon everyone to work together to create sustainable Support Systems to provide breastfeeding knowledge, confidence, and skills to breastfeed successfully. As well as to promote policies and programs that support breastfeeding
